part #2 of The Infected - Mirror Man Series
It itched, rather than being painful this time. A lot, to be truthful. As he stretched and grew taller, his clothing amulet had to be turned off. That left him sitting there naked. Able to see his limbs melt like wax, then shift and slowly change color. After an hour or so, he was brought a mirror.
The face reflected in it was fine. Not exactly his, true. It was a good face and similar to what he was used to. The jawline was strong and his nose was a bit smaller. His ears, which had always stuck out a bit, didn’t now. At the same time, he was close enough to himself that he wasn’t going to need new papers when he got back home.
Richard nodded.
“That works! Let me…” He stood, looking down to notice that the bits between his legs were a bit larger than they had been before. It wasn’t a thing that he’d even thought to ask about, not being concerned that way. Seeing where he looked, Alyssa Baker grinned.
“All right, so I might have added a few things that weren’t talked about. I didn’t know what you were like before, so… Kind of went big with it.”
The largest thing was that he could see her now. Really, he could tell the difference between everyone in the room. Including the Ysidril. That part was unexpected and it was only Neesa and Erath. They both looked like themselves though. As clearly as anyone else looked to him. It hadn’t been the case the last time he’d met any Ysidril as a human being.
Getting dressed with a tap at his neck put him in plain brown clothing and boots. Then he stretched, bent and twisted. Finally, just to make certain everything was all right, he reached up, tapping the mirror that Mrs. Baker was holding for him.
It was a creation of magic, not solid at all. Still, as his fingers encountered it, he vanished into a world of darkness, with only points of light to allow him to see out. Interestingly, there in the inky black was a bit of fluff and feline cuteness. In the darkness, he picked her up, knowing that it felt like Tabitha. A representation of her in his mind, no doubt.
Then, still holding the cat in his head, given they were linked, he tapped the shiny space in the air that showed the people on the other side all around him. At least the front halves of them.
No one screamed at his magic trick. Then, they were all used to things like that. The only difference with him was that, when he came out, he had a small tabby cat in his arms.
A thing that surprised him, he had to admit. He hadn’t thought about it when he’d picked her up but he really had missed someone on his trip. A certain tiny, fur covered person. She purred and didn’t try to jump down. She also didn’t scratch anyone when they moved in to pet her. Not even the Ysidril.
“Now, how in the world did that happen?” No one answered him. Then, no one there, including himself, actually understood how his powers worked.
That he’d gone into a mirror and come out with Tabitha, who had been in a different reality was… Wild.
No one seemed to mind having a cat around however. That could have been a worry. Thankfully, no one there seemed to be allergic at all.
After a bit more stretching, a certain feline in his arms the whole time, he was announced to be in good health. All of which was recorded on various devices for later playback. Carefully, he was given hugs, with Tabitha in the mix. Including by Erath, Neesa and Alyssa.
He understood what that meant to the Ysidril now, at least. It was kind of a letdown, doing that sort of thing the normal human way.
After that, the room was cleared, and several people walked in, led by Cindy Mableton. An attractive blonde woman who actually looked like herself now. Not that she hadn’t before. He simply hadn’t been able to see it.
Turner, Yi, Thompkins and Yoder were there. The ones he needed for the heist. That thought got him to smile. A thing that he’d missed being able to do.
“Right. We have a job. Stealing back the information that we already stole. So, as you all probably get, that part won’t be too hard for us. The real trick is…” He stopped for a moment, as the others slowly started to get it.
Kerry seemed nearly scared. It wasn’t what the pretty woman seemed like, most days.
“The trick will be in using this to get the news out? We haven’t been able to really, so far. How do we use this?”
Richard Drake pet his cat for a moment, getting the young-looking feline girl to purr louder.
“Easy. We set someone up, then make sure they get caught, publicly, with all the information. Someone high profile enough that hiding the evidence won’t really work. Any suggestions on who we hate enough to do that to?”
It was funny but there were some. More than a few. Including a few prominent politicians.
That probably wasn’t going to work, of course. Especially if they were in on the horrible things that the others were. Still, Richard nodded.
“We can set that up, then. The trick will be in making certain that nothing can ever come back on us. I have some ideas for that.”
Mainly using a combination of distraction and magic. Things that no one would be looking for at all. Not at the level he meant to bring things into play.
Smiling, glad to be able to do it again, he pet the cat.
“Now… We need to get some more changes made. That will take pictures. Anyone up for a quick trip back to our world for that?”
It wasn’t going to be that easy. They all understood the basic idea though.
They were going to set up some of the most evil people on their planet, for the theft of data that would incriminate themselves.
That left him feeling almost alive again.
As well as a bit baffled. After all, he had a cat in his arms. A thing that didn’t make much sense to him in the moment at all. Not that it was a bad thing. Just one that didn’t fit with what he knew about his powers.
“I need to work on that. What my abilities can do? Before we start in on this whole thing. We need to actually plan now, or else this could end up going very wrong.”
Everyone there seemed to agree with him.
Even Tabitha.
Which made total sense. She was very smart after all.
