  It was a taunt.

  A game.

  A challenge.

In times of past, how do you see me now?

When the Light you offer is Darkness, tell me how?

I bring the true Light, shining bright and clear,

The fallen Knight is no loss, for I have no fear.

Paved the path to Glory, with each step I take,

For I am the Light, no shadows can forsake.

The role you gave me, that of the Black Monk,

Guiding with wisdom, from every hidden nook.

My spiritual link, in tune with others,

  in the Basilica's dark shadow,

A beacon of hope where doubts once grew, like a meadow.

The information I offer, will mold minds anew,

Under one Light, under One God, we stay true.

Father Auciello thought his heart would misfire in his chest. Slowly, disbelievingly, he read out loud, “The role you gave me . . . that of the Black Monk . . .” He let his words hang.

“It’s Jonah,” Father Essex whispered. Then he closed his eyes, his mind churning with anger knowing that the message was sent by Kimball Hayden’s killer.

“Why?” Father Auciello asked, sounding lost. “Why is he doing this? What is he planning with the use of AI?”

  They reread the passages.

Then from Father Auciello, “He sees the church as his enemy—plans to alter its teachings.”

“Kimball always believed that he wasn’t right—that he wasn’t fit to serve as a Vatican Knight or as a cleric. It was his assessment that got Jonah excommunicated from the church.”

  “And now he wants—what? Revenge?”

“No,” said Father Essex. “He wants something more. He wants to change the course of Vatican protocol. ‘The information I offer,’ he read, ‘will mold minds anew.’ He’s using AI to spread disinformation across Europe to influence people, for them to see things from a different perspective . . . And one that could do harm to the church.”

And then the message was gone, like magic, the codes and characters scrolling once again on the main screen.

“We lost the feed,” said Brother Matteo.

“Keep looking for gateways,” Father Auciello told him. “I want to know exactly why he’s spreading disinformation across Europe, the type of program he’s using, his goal for doing so.”

  “Yes, Father.”

Father Auciello drew close to Father Essex, the two in close council with one another, the two speaking in whispers.

“Jonah’s teasing us, you know that, out of spite,” Father Essex whispered.

Father Auciello nodded. “He wanted us to see that message. He gave us that gateway. Who’s to say he’ll open another doorway to reveal his intentions. I don’t think he will. Moreso, if someone is involved from the Vatican, we need to ferret that person out. I don’t know if Jonah’s being arrogant or just plain stupid.” Then he read another passage: “’My spiritual link, in tune with others, in the Basilica's dark shadow, a beacon of hope where doubts once grew, like a meadow.’ “To me,” Father Auciello added, “that passage alone tells me there’s another involved, one who walks the halls of the Vatican.”

“Or perhaps more than one,” Father Essex stated softly.

“Whatever Jonah’s up to, it’s not good for the church. But this,” he said, pointing to the screen, “goes much further than the boundaries of Vatican City . . . He’s eclipsing the entire continent of Europe with his disinformation.”

Now, he thought, to find out why.

  CHAPTER TWO

  The Papal Chamber

  The Apostolic Palace, The Vatican

  Three Hours Later

In the confines of the pontiff's chamber, Fathers Essex and Auciello sat in tense deliberation, their minds grappling with the gravity of the situation unfolding before them.

"Jonah's actions are unprecedented," Father Essex began, his voice laden with concern. "The anomalous codes he's employing in Europe are spreading disinformation at an alarming rate, eclipsing even the most reputable news sources. The program is cloning voices of political figures and playing damning messages to undermine their authority, when these politicians have never uttered a word that’s being played out over social media. It's unlike anything we've encountered before."

Pope Innocent IX tilted his head slightly. "And his motives? Do we have any insight into what he seeks to achieve with this chaos?"

"We're still piecing together the puzzle and we have some theories as to his possible intent," Father Essex admitted. "But it's evident that his endgame is nothing short of catastrophic. The extent of his reach and influence will be staggering, if he doesn’t stop soon."

“And you’re sure that this is being conducted by Jonah, of all people?”

"He’s made it abundantly clear, Your Holiness. It’s him."

Pope Innocent IX nodded solemnly; his gaze fixed on the lush red carpet beneath his feet. "His tactics are insidious, no doubt. By saturating the digital landscape with disinformation, as you say, he seeks to sow discord and division among the masses. But to what end?"

Father Essex interjected. " Your Holiness, we think Jonah's goal is to condemn certain political incumbents while elevating others who would serve Jonah's needs. He would do this by undermining the political platforms of constitutionally minded officeholders. And with Jonah's help, he would use AI influence to insert these new people into power. Once they usurp their respective offices, they would be beholden to him. They would become Jonah's puppets who would be more than happy to show Jonah gratitude for what he has done for them. It's a calculated strategy aimed at destabilizing Europe for his gain."

“And those he’s trying to elevate?”

“According to the AI streams, those with extremist ideologies.”

  “Extremists . . . Why?”

Father Auciello shrugged. “It’s unclear at this point since we’re in the beginning stages of the investigation. But the AI data streams are there, and the social media is eating it up with the disinformation traveling at an unprecedented speed across Europe.”

“And your assessment on the fate of my position and the position of the church, given what you’ve intercepted thus far?”

“The data is slight, but what we’ve been able to deduce, Your Holiness, is the disinformation gleaned from social media sites could shroud your reputation," Father Auciello warned. "They may see you not as the shepherd guiding the flock, but as the devil within the church, leading them astray with wanton immorality."

The pontiff's features tightened with resolve as he absorbed the implications of Father Auciello's words. "We cannot allow falsehoods to tarnish the integrity of our faith," he told him. "We must stand firm in our convictions and combat this matter with the truth. I do believe that God will prevail, not the hand of a man whose soul is spiritually destitute."

"There’s also another matter, Your Holiness. One that requires great attention, " Father Auciello said. "Given Jonah’s message, though cryptic, speaks volumes that corruption may be threatening the very soul of the Church."

Father Essex nodded, then said, " There’s a possibility that high-ranking officials may be colluding with Jonah, betraying their vows and their faith."

The pontiff listened intently; his brow furrowed with worry. "A deduction, you say, but one you're confident in stating?"

"Indeed, Your Holiness," Father Essex affirmed. "The Vatican cannot afford to trust blindly, not even those within the Society of Seven."

The mention of the Society drew a heavy silence, the weight of their allegiance, once a stalwart unit within the halls of the Vatican, now questioned.

"If disagreement festers among them without your knowledge," Father Auciello added, "they may continue to balk at your direction, Your Holiness."

Pope Innocent IX, after a pause, stated, "From this point on, Jonah will be referred to as the Black Monk since he’s no longer deserving of a callsign marking the title of a Vatican Knight. With that said, what course of action do you propose in regard to discovering possible insurrectionists within the Vatican?"

"Vatican Intelligence is working on trying to pinpoint the origin point of the AI feeds. While we use measures to intercept and try to ferret out the insurrectionists within the church, it’ll be up to the Vatican Knights to neutralize the threat that the Black Monk poses to this institution from whatever stronghold he’s operating from."

The pontiff nodded thoughtfully. "To deploy the Vatican Knights, we would need the approval of the Society of Seven."

Father Auciello leaned forward, his expression grave. "A risk, Your Holiness. What if one among them is in league with the Black Monk?"

The pontiff's gaze hardened; his jaw set with determination. "We must trust in our mandate. Moreso, we must place our faith in God. In the meantime, use all resources to find the Black Monk, and the decision will follow."

Father Essex bowed his head and said, “Yes, Your Holiness.”

After Fathers Essex and Auciello exited the chamber, leaving Pope Innocent IX alone amidst the grandeur of his chambers, the pontiff found himself coping with the weight of the unfolding crisis.

Burdened by the gravity of the situation, Pope Innocent IX turned his gaze to the crucifix that adorned the chamber's wall. Its silent presence seemed to offer solace in the midst of uncertainty.

Bowing his head in sincere reverence, the pontiff sought refuge in prayer, his whispered words echoing in the hallowed space. In that moment of introspection, he beseeched for guidance and strength, acknowledging the formidable power of artificial intelligence and the relentless challenges it presented.

In the stillness of his solitude, Pope Innocent IX resolved to confront the crisis with unwavering resolve, drawing upon the timeless wisdom of faith and the resilience of the human spirit. For in the face of adversity, it was in the depths of his faith that he found the courage to persevere.

  CHAPTER THREE

Several hours after Fathers Essex and Auciello met with the pontiff, Europe's democratic landscape, while under the deceptive influence of AI-powered disinformation, cast a shadow over the upcoming elections where candidates with extremist views sought to exploit societal divisions for political gain. As the continent grappled with the proliferation of false narratives propagated through social media and news outlets, the integrity of the electoral process hung in the balance.

Across Europe, the dissemination of AI-generated disinformation intensified in the lead-up to the elections, amplifying false accounts and exacerbating societal tensions. Targeting vulnerable populations with tailored messages, these campaigns sought to manipulate public opinion and undermine trust in democratic institutions. As a result, voters became increasingly susceptible to the allure of candidates espousing extremist ideologies, whose platforms resonated with their fears and grievances.

Moreover, the Vatican, a bastion of spiritual leadership and moral authority, was not immune to the damaging effects of AI-powered disinformation. False narratives spread across digital platforms tarnished the image of the Church, eroding trust in its leadership and teachings. The dissemination of misinformation undermined the Vatican's efforts to foster unity and promote its message of faith and compassion, further complicating its mission in an already challenging socio-political landscape.

In response to this growing threat, European governments and tech companies mobilized efforts to combat the spread of AI-powered disinformation. Enhanced media literacy initiatives aimed to empower citizens with the critical thinking skills necessary to discern fact from fiction, while regulatory frameworks sought to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in facilitating the dissemination of misinformation.

Despite these efforts, the specter of AI-powered disinformation loomed large over the electoral process, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the recent elections and the stability of European democracies. As voters navigated a landscape inundated with false information and divisive rhetoric, the future of Europe hung in the balance.

In the face of this existential threat, however, European leaders remained vigilant and resolute in their commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. By confronting the scourge of AI-powered disinformation head-on, Europe could reaffirm its commitment to truth, transparency, and democratic governance, ensuring that the voices of its citizens were heard, and their votes counted.

But reshaping the minds of those who had already succumbed to the disinformation, believing that governments were backtracking to cover their trails, proved a challenging task. Instilling truth would be difficult for them to redigest.

Nevertheless, the Vatican, along with its alliances, and despite the distrust within the Vatican walls, took action to counter the effects of the Black Monk.

  CHAPTER FOUR

  Subterranean Warehouse

  Transylvania, Romania

  Evening

A single flickering light struggled against the darkness, casting dancing shadows across the crumbling brick walls of the abandoned warehouse. Jonah stood tall in the center of the vast space with hands clasped behind his back. His steely gaze met that of Demerol, his second in command, whose religious fervor mirrored Jonah's.

"The Church's moral compass has lost its direction," Jonah said, his voice low but firm. "Men should bend to God's will, not the other way around. We must restore the true purpose of the Vatican, no matter the cost."

Demerol nodded, his unwavering eyes locked on Jonah's face. He saw a prophet, a leader destined to restore the Church's glory.

"God's hand guides us, Jonah," Demerol replied, his voice steady. "We will reshape the Church, and through it, Europe. Our cause is just."

Jonah clenched his jaw as conviction flashed in his eyes. Memories of his time as a Vatican Knight surfaced – a mission undertaken to protect the innocent. But those days were gone, replaced by a burning desire for change achievable only by toppling the very institution he once served.

"The Church has become a den of corruption and sin," Jonah stated evenly. "They've forgotten their place and what it means to serve the divine. We will remind them, even if it means tearing down the Vatican walls itself."

Demerol nodded, a silent testament to his loyalty. "Tell me what you need. I'll follow you to the ends of the earth, Jonah. You know this."

When Jonah looked into Demerol's eyes, he saw neither fear nor doubt. And in that moment a realization dawned on him – they spoke with the odd zeal of fire-and-brimstone preachers, the very image of fanatics they didn't consider themselves to be.

"First," Jonah began, his voice steely, "we need a new pontiff – one who serves our cause and will bend the Church to our will. AI misinformation will sway public opinion to force his resignation. Once the Vatican is under our control, Europe will follow."

Demerol nodded. Together, they would reshape the world according to their vision – a continent ruled by the iron fist of the Church, its purpose untainted.

"The social media disinformation campaign is gaining traction," Demerol reported. "But achieving our goals will take time. Governments, warned by the Vatican, are trying to counter it."

"Keep pushing the AI. It will develop resistance to neutralize their programs. By the time they develop a defense, it’ll be too late. European minds will be conditioned to distrust the incumbents."

The flickering light cast shadows on Jonah's face as he paced the concrete floor, boots echoing in the vast emptiness. Demerol leaned against a rusted metal beam, his eyes fixed on Jonah.

"Jonah," Demerol interjected, "I understand your grievances with the Church. But protecting the innocent and punishing those who prey on them remains our duty, even when the papacy is under our control. The world is steeped in darkness, and we must remain its champions after this is over."

"Of course," Jonah replied, a bitter edge to his voice. "But even the most powerful institutions can become corrupt and must be held accountable. Moral sacrifices are inevitable to achieve our ends. Remember that when the time comes to purge the Vatican of those who appear angelic but possess demonic souls. No one will be spared."

Jonah paused as a haunting memory resurfaced. "In the Philippines," he began, his voice tight, "I was tasked with eliminating a group threatening the vulnerable. I did what had to be done – swift, final executions. I believed I was carrying out God's will, but the Vatican Knights disagreed. Kimball Hayden himself called for my excommunication, claiming I was unfit to serve."

Demerol's brow furrowed, his loyalty evident in his concern. "You merely protected those who couldn't protect themselves – the very essence of our mission as Vatican Knights."

"Exactly!" Jonah exclaimed, slamming his fist into his palm. "They were blinded by their narrow-mindedness, their misguided sense of righteousness. They cast me out, labeled me a monster, all because I refused to let evil persist when I had the power to end it. Which I did."

"Perhaps the Vatican Knights strayed from the path," Demerol said. "Perhaps their unwillingness to confront true evil as you did has left them weak as they continue to cling to false ideals as the world crumbles around them."

"Then it falls to us," Jonah said with a slight smile, "to tear down their hypocrisy and build something new. We will not allow the Church to become a refuge for cowards and charlatans, shall we?"

Demerol nodded. "Together, we’ll right the wrongs and shape a future where all innocent life is protected, and the wicked are punished."

"And where better than to start at the Vatican?” Smiling with what could have been considered paternal pride, Jonah said, “You and those under your command are my new Vatican Knights. And no matter how long it takes, or what sacrifices must be made, I will rectify the listing ship that is the Vatican."
