The bus journey was pretty quiet, and he arrived outside the front gate in no time. It was open as usual, and Curtis knew Pearce usually came in early on a Sunday to get the following week in check. The door was open, and Curtis strolled in.

He called out to Pearce, his voice echoing through the empty building. A little flashback of being snatched by the man the day before flickered in his mind like a showreel, but Curtis overcame it.

  That man was dead.

He saw it with his own eyes.

He ventured further into the building, deducing that it was empty. With a shrug, he walked towards the storage room, where JC sometimes sat and read.

  Maybe he was lying low?

It was a long shot, but after knocking a few times and getting nothing, Curtis opened the door. Apart from the usual apparatus and junk, the room was empty.

Except for JC’s pristine toolbox, something that he took great pride in and explained to Curtis the importance of preparation. Within its contents were top of the range tools, worth well over a thousand pounds and Curtis had made bold claims about having his own one day.

A note was taped to the top of it and Curtis snatched it off the box and began to read:

  To Curtis,

With all my heart I am sorry about what you witnessed yesterday. It was never my intention to bring that side of my life into yours and I hope you can get past it. If you need to reach out to someone, speak to Adrian.

Keep walking your path. You have no idea what you are capable of, but I do, and I want you to have these tools to find out.

  Be better than me.

  JC

Curtis wiped his eyes. With absent parents, belief wasn’t something he had felt through his life. But he clutched the letter tightly, knowing that despite whatever he was going through after killing a man, JC had kept him in mind.

After a few moments and a couple more reads of the letter, Curtis opened the toolbox to learn each and every tool within it, determined to prove JC right.

Determined to not be better than him, but to be like him.

  A good man.
