  CHAPTER 1 – Joanie

“Oh hey, Mrs. Browning, um, so, I was wondering if Viv was back from that math camp retreat you sent her on?”

Yeah, I’m the best friend, name is Joanie Spark. Just in case you were wondering, I’m the better looking one.

Ha! I am totally kidding. Viv is gorgeous with that lost innocent little girl look of hers.

I am more the girl you don’t want to meet in a dark alley. Viv and I both have long dark hair, but my eyes are a freaky shade of gold, and I have freckles where Viv is all perfect alabaster complexion.

Her body was runner lithe with just enough curve to keep the boys interested.

I must have stood in line and got two helpings of curves, both in the boobs and in the trunk. I was used to construction workers whistling at me and learned to ward off any unwanted male attention. A kick to the jewels or a headbutt usually put the douche bag in his place.

The thing was, it wasn’t as fun anymore. Viv and I had always been partners. Shit, Viv and I have been total BFF’s since kindergarten.

Susan Browning reached a hand up to her frizzy orange hair. “Joanie, I told you that I don’t really know when she is coming back from, err, camp.”

Okay, you can totally tell when an adult is lying to you. First off, they don’t look you in the eye, and they get fidgety. Second, if you are going to lie to anyone with reasonable intelligence, practice it first. There are no camps that run from prom to sorority pledge night. I know that Old Suzy thinks I am a bit of an airhead, but come on, I know they’re lying.

The parentals had been super weird as well. Clark and Jenny Spark that own the pet store over on fifth, off of Montgomery St. Viv and I have besties forever, sleepovers, cheerleading, trips to the lake. I knew the Browning house just as well as I did my own.

But get this, ever since prom, my parents have told me to stay away from there. They said it wasn’t safe. I mean, that is ridiculous. How could it not be safe? Mrs. Browning hasn’t removed the safety latches from the drawers yet, and we are eighteen.

I don’t always break the rules, just the stupid ones. Staying away from Viv’s parents was totally stupid.

“Do you have a phone number I could call her at?” I tried again, but the older woman just shook her head and tried to close the door—in my face.

“Mrs. Browning, I am really worried about...”

Susan turned her icy gaze toward me, and I felt it to the tips of my toes.

“How have you been feeling lately, Joanie?”

I blinked at the sudden change in conversation.

  “I’m good, just worried about...”

Her face hardened, and she all but shouted at me, “You need to go home and stop bothering us.”

The door slammed with finality, and I wanted to march back up the steps and pound on it. Something was wrong, and Susan Browning was in the middle of it.

Sighing, I did the only thing that I could think of. I climbed back into my rust bucket of a car and drove it over to Jimmy’s house.

“Ugh, mom, tell her I am not here!” Jimmy yelled over his shoulder, thinking that his mom was at the door. But his mom was outside taking the dog for a walk. I happened to meet her just as I pulled up, and she’d let me in.

Okay, so since Viv disappeared, I had been hanging out a lot more with Jimmy. My boyfriend, he who must eat shit and die, dumped me because I wouldn’t put out. I am almost 99% sure I was the only person at graduation who was also carrying her v-card.

Another big thank you to Viv for disappearing. If she had been there, we would have been two kick-ass virgins together, and it wouldn’t have been so hard.

I yanked the power cord to his TV out of the wall, and the game he was playing went black.

“I can hear you, butt munch,” I said from the doorway. “Do you really need to play games and be on the computer at the same time?”

Jimmy ripped off his headset and scowled at me from his spot in front of the computer.

  “My fans need me!”

  I smirked.

He continued. “Look, I don’t know what happened to Viv, and after she tried to eat me, I don’t care. I don’t want to rehash it every day. So, if you are here to talk about anything else...”

I grabbed a chair and turned it around backwards before plopping myself down. “Ha! You only wish she would try and eat you.”

Jimmy grinned. “You are worse than a twelve-year-old boy. Seriously, Joanie.”

I made a rude gesture with my hands and mouth. I might have a little issue with acting inappropriately—or a big issue.

“Go out with me,” Jimmy said suddenly.

I frowned. “Jimmy, we have been over this before. I can’t date you. Every time I see you, I think of Viv, and my heart goes all crazy because I know she’s somewhere out there. My parents are hiding something; her parents are hiding something, I need your help!”

Jimmy scratched his head, ruffling his hair and giving him a slightly boyish look.

“I have gone over this, Joanie. You don’t believe me, nobody does, and now my parents have me in therapy, and the lady talks to me like I am seven. She actually accused me of trying to live in a Twilight novel!”

I scrunched my nose up. “What’s that?”

I had never been much of a reader.

Jimmy blushed. “Nothing! It’s nothing, and I don’t believe it’s true no matter what she says.”

“Are you still saying Viv is a vampire, Jimmy?”

His cheek ticked mutinously. “You weren’t there.”

“They said that you fell and cut your neck,” I repeated the same thing that I always did when we had this conversation. “Sometimes people get post-traumatic stress and...”

Jimmy rolled his eyes. “I know what PTSD is, I watch cable; and she is a vampire. Now go away; if you won’t go out with me and won’t believe me, we have nothing more to say.”

He yanked his headphones back on and plugged his TV back into the wall. Seconds later, his eyes were immersed in the screen, and he was commentating something to whoever was on the other side of the camera.

Feeling emboldened, I moved swiftly and got in front of the feed.

“Hi, my best friend Viv is missing. Jimmy thinks she is a vampire. If you have any information, please call...”

The power was flipped off, and Jimmy stood there with fire in his eyes. “You gave my real name on my stream?”

I hate to admit, but I did cower a little. “Is that bad?”

“Fifty thousand people were watching, Joanie. You just told them my name and that I believe in vampires. Are you fucking insane?”

  Maybe.

But I wasn’t going to admit to it.

“I said that Jimmy thinks she’s a vampire, I didn’t say that you were Jimmy. Just play it off as a joke.”

“Leave, Joanie!” The anger in his tone brooked no argument, and I knew when it was time to cut my losses. I scrambled out of his room and down to my rust bucket. I had parked it in the street, but when I got there, it was gone.

“Fucking hell!” I kicked the dirt. Was everything going to go wrong around me?

With a sigh, I began to walk back toward home.

I don’t know when the van pulled up beside me. Only that one second, I was walking down the street, and in the next, I had a bag over my head, and the van was speeding away.

TER 2 – Joanie

“Um, Mrs. Browning? When did you start kidnapping people? Are you feeling alright?”

Susan Browning had indeed looked better. Her frizzy hair was particularly frizzed out, and she was muttering things to herself.

“You weren’t kidnapped, Joanie,” my mom said for what had to be the hundredth time.

But she was wrong. I was kidnapped. They put a freaking bag over my head and hauled me off to... wherever this was, and I couldn’t leave this room. It was crazy insane, and I really missed Viv.

“Look, Mom, do you, like, sacrifice people or anything? Because hey, I am not here to judge. I just want to know why you are giving off the creepy vibes.”

“Joanie!” My dad yelled at me in the voice that was supposed to brook no argument. But it never worked. My dad was like a cream puff.

“I am serious. Why can’t I see where we are, and for that matter where are we? Where is Viv and why are you acting so odd?”

My dad shook his head and turned to my mom. “There is no reasoning with her. We should have known at the beginning that something wasn’t right.”

“Are you saying I was dropped on my head at birth?” I asked in a bored voice.

My dad was a freaker-outer. He loved to make things out to be a million time worse than they really were. So, if he is saying things will be fine, honestly, they probably would be. It just might not happen the way that the ‘rents want it to. But I could care less about their wants or needs at the moment.

“Sweetie,” my mom’s placating tone indicated that she was about to say something worthless, and I turned back to Susan.

“Are we going to find Viv? Is that what this is about? Because I could really get behind that, I mean, of course, you care that she’s missing. I was totally off by suspecting you and Mr. Browning might have something to do with it.”

Right there, I sealed my fate.

You see, I suffer from big mouth syndrome. I just don’t know when to shut up, and apparently, this little tidbit was just one step too far.

Susan’s gaze whipped around to narrow in on me.

  “Jenny, I warned you.”

At first, I thought she was talking to me. I opened my mouth to say something, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw a syringe dangling from my dad’s wrist as he approached me.

“Wait!” I managed to blurt before it was injected into my neck, and I was out again.

The next time I awakened it was to my mom shaking my shoulder and none too gently.

“Joanie! Joanie!” She smacked me hard across the face, and my eyes shot open.

“Mom?” Tears began to gather, that shit hurt! “What is going on?”

“You have to get away from here.” My mom was frantic. She shoved a big wad of cash in my hands. “This is all the money I could get out of an ATM. You need to get to Viv, or at least as far from the Brownings as you possibly can.”

“What is going on?” I repeated, trying to take the money and shake the residual drug from my veins.

“There isn’t time, Joanie!” She reached up and cupped my face, kissing my forehead fiercely once before saying in a low voice, “Run as far, and as fast as you can and never, I am serious, never come back here.”

Her voice broke, and she shoved me toward a door.

“Where are we?” I tried to get my bearings. My legs felt like they were still half asleep, and my brain was fuzzy. My wrists were sore, and I looked down to see the zip ties that my mom had cut away. “Mom, you need to come with me!”

There was the sound of footsteps approaching that interrupted my thoughts.

“No,” she whispered. “You have to escape this insanity. You will escape. It’s too late for your dad and me. We should never have gotten involved in the first place.”

She lifted her wrist and sliced a clean cut across it.

Everything stood still; it was as if my body was inexplicably drawn to the bizarre action. I could smell the coppery goodness of her blood and wanted to draw nearer. The cut wasn’t deep and certainly wasn’t fatal. But it drew me like nothing I had ever experienced before.

My teeth began to ache, and I moved toward her with menacing steps, the money in my hands falling to the floor.

“No!” she hissed. “Get the money, now!”

My mother never yelled at me, even in a whisper. It distracted me for the slightest moment but not long enough. I grabbed her arm, almost wanting to taste the blood. That was insane! I obviously had spent way too much time with Jimmy and his crazy accusations.

I wanted to throw her arm away from me, but the burning in my teeth was drawing me nearer and nearer.

“You need to start the change, Joanie. You are younger than Viv. She was over a year when the Brownings brought you both home. You were a baby. But we are out of time. They will kill you before things can occur naturally.”

She shoved her wrist into my mouth, and my teeth seemed to pierce into her skin. It was strange and wonderful at the same time. I began to drink, slowly at first but as my thirst intensified, I continued to suck until I felt euphoric.

The door slammed open, and my father stood there horrified. In his hands was a wooden stake. I pulled my fangs out of my mother’s arm and pounced. My father, being the hero that he was, threw the stake in my direction and ran screaming.

“Go!” my mother managed to choke out.

I looked down at the money and quickly picked it up. There was blood on my clothes and hands, and it was sticking to the bills, but I shoved them into my pocket. I heard voices and knew that we were seconds from exposure. I glanced at the window and made a split-second decision.

Wrenching it open I jumped, not even sure how I knew that my body could survive the fall. I tumbled headlong into the darkness and gasped when the icy water enveloped me. I had always been a strong swimmer. I allowed the current to drag me further down before wading to the side and pulling myself out on the banks.

I could hear voices and shouting.

Reason told me that if they were searching for me, I was better off moving further downstream. The dogs couldn’t chase me in the water. I felt the lump in my pocket and wondered how the money had fared. But I didn’t have time to look.

Wading back into the current, I put my feet forward and braced myself for a wild ride. The voices and shouting that I had been hearing became faint and then nonexistent. My body was so cold from the water. My subconscious was beginning to play tricks on me.

This time, swimming to the side took everything that was within me. The forest was dark here, and I welcomed it. Moving a little further up, I shivered as I looked for a place to hide and rest.

There was nothing but inky blackness around me, and I realized that the game of chicken I had been playing with reality had just been lost. Blackness enveloped me, and I slumped to the ground and knew no more.

  CHAPTER 3 – Joanie

My eyes popped open the second the twig snapped behind me. The prey was perhaps a hundred feet away, maybe less; there were two of them, no three. They were approaching quickly, too fast for humans, and I had no idea how I knew that. Before they were upon me, I bounded to my feet in a move that would have made Jackie Chan proud.

Three males were circling. My teeth no longer ached, they were extended and sharp. My mouth felt sticky from dried blood, and I felt a pang in my heart. But the thirst was too strong to let it linger.

“Easy,” one of the males said to me, “You are going to be okay.”

Hysterical laughter escaped my lips. “I think I killed my mother, my best friend has been missing for months, and I am seriously seconds away from sucking you all dry. Nothing will ever be okay again.”

The tallest one lunged at me, and I dodged him, feinting left and then bolting hard to the right. Instead of running away from the males I went straight for the one who spoke. I sank my fingers into his muscular arms and had my mouth at his neck when I felt the other grab my waist.

I kicked behind me and heard when my foot connected with his balls.

The second one dropped, but the third, the tallest one, had a syringe of something. And so once again I found myself losing consciousness. This was beginning to be a habit that I didn’t care for at all.

WHEN I STARTED COMING to, I noticed that I was tied up with steel cording and shoved into a plane seat. The lights were low, and we were thousands of miles above the earth. I went to scream, but because of the gag, it came out as a garbled whimper.
