Arms.
Jackson rose up from where he was sitting. He calmly walked to the chrome polished lifts with the grey suited Porter flanking him, who pushed the call button unnecessarily so, a few times...
They both stood there staring blankly ahead at their brushed steel reflections. Jackson could see out of the corner of his eye, the porter eyeing the ring still on Jackson’s pinkie.
The porter cleared his throat before he spoke in his regimental ‘ex forces tone of voice. You could tell he was ex forces not just by his voice, but by the way he held himself. Jackson had always suppressed the urge to say ‘at ease’ as he walked past him in the foyer of Rebecca’s reception.
“I’ve been married for 43 years; although I sometimes think; that was only because I was still serving overseas and she was here.”
He shrugged his shoulders as he turned his head to Jackson.
“Women, can’t live with them, can’t live without them.”
Jackson’s nodded his head, even though he was looking at the floor. He could hear the lift nearing as it travelled up the lift shaft.
He knew he had to act quickly. Knowing full well, this chap to the left of him, although quite mature, would undeniably still able to handle any situation that arose. He was without a doubt ex Army, maybe he had even been one of those Sneaky Beaky SAS lads. The Porter spoke again.
“Yep I know what it’s like; my Mrs. needs time to cool down as well... I’m sorry to be doing this sir, but she did call down to the reception... I’m only doing my job.”
Jackson stood there , contemplating whether or not he should try to reason with this chap seeing as he empathised with him. He couldn’t just walk away from Rebecca. He had promised her, he would never do that.
He had only recently promised her this, while in Ibiza. There, they had all the time to talk about everything, including Jason. Those two weeks showed him, the life he never knew he wanted, that was, until he had met Rebecca.
He knew it at their very first meeting at the hotel not far from her work. When she had walked in through that lobby and shook his hand, he felt the sparks fly between them. But now, now he had this overwhelming love for her. Back then, it had been just a burning desire, now it was an inferno.
He had to win her back. He couldn’t leave it like this. He wasn’t going to abandon her like everyone else had done in her life...
And with that, the sound of the elevator drew closer, jolting him back to his reality. There was a ping and the doors opened. Jackson and the Porter moved forwards stepping into the lift. Jackson hesitated momentarily before quickly stepping out of the lift, just as the doors were closing leaving the Porter hammering on the doors trapped inside as he headed for the ground floor.
Jackson hurriedly walked down the corridor towards Rebecca’s door, knowing time was against him.
He rapped on the doors again...
“Rebecca, let me in... I’m not leaving... I promise you, I’ve nothing to do with this; you have to let me in... You have to believe me Rebecca... I made a promise to you that ‘I wouldn’t leave you, and I’m not going to now... Open the door. Rebecca, please... Please you have to believe me. We can figure what’s going on together. Rebecca, please open the door.”
His knuckles still rapped on the door, he leaned his head against it.
“All I know is that... I love you, please open the door,” the desperation in his voice apparent.
Rebecca had turned the music off. He could hear her moving around inside. Jackson rapped on the door again.
“Rebecca, I love you, and I know you love me.”
His words came out hurriedly as he heard the elevator ascending again to their floor as he hammered harder on the door pleading with her.
The lift doors pinged yet again signalling that the doors were opening, and his time was up.
Out marched the Porter in quick pace, and he didn’t look happy at all as he marched towards Jackson like a steam train gaining momentum with every thunderous step he took...
He rapped again on the door, looking over his shoulder knowing full well, that at any moment, he would feel the full extent of the steam train coming towards him at full speed.
His pleas became more urgent...
“Rebecca, please, open the door... Don’t throw everything we have away; this has nothing to do with me... It’s that fucking turd Thomas Peak... You must believe me... I’ve never lied to you and I’m not going to start now.”
And with that, the Porter tackled Jackson to the ground in full on tackle mode. He felt the full force of the train crashing into him.
Jackson lay there for a moment, trying to gather his bearings. He shook his head trying to shake the stars he was now seeing. Jackson lay there, leaning up on his elbows.
The old man had strength and then some. The Porter was on his feet already and now lunged towards him, forcibly pulling him to his feet by his shoulders, when he heard the door unlock...
It opened slowly, slightly ajar, enough for Jackson to see Rebecca looking through the gap at the commotion.
It must have been when she saw Jackson being forcibly manhandled off the ground, when Rebecca flung the door wide. The Porter successfully yanked Jackson up by his jacket lapels to his feet, Rebecca burst through the door towards them.
The Porter had abruptly turned Jackson around, and had his hands wrenched up behind his back as he frogmarched Jackson towards the elevator. All Jackson could do was to surrender, and comply, and move with the Porter in his arrested state back towards the lift.
Rebecca chased after them waving her hands in protest as she pleaded with the porter to release Jackson from his needless grip.
“Please let him go, you’re hurting him,” she pleaded as she tried to remove the Porter’s tight grip on Jackson.
“Whatever you say Miss.”
The Porter stood there; shaking his head as he released his firm grip on Jackson’s arms, still halfway up his back.
Jackson shook his arms out, as he could feel the stretch on his muscles, and he straightened himself out from the scuffle.
He stood in front of Rebecca, he wanted to hug her, when she looked up at him; her eyes were puffy from crying.
The tear stains still etched on her beautiful face, he raised his hands up, cupping her face, as his thumbs wiped the tears that still popped out of her eyes.
He wanted to kiss her and never let her go. This was not the night that he had planned for them. It broke his heart to see her like this. He knew the Porter was still behind him. He could feel him like a tiger, ready to pounce on him again at any moment.
It was the Porter who spoke first breaking the awkward silence.
“Miss, shall I still remove the gentleman, or....?” The Porter trailed off, not knowing what to say next.
Rebecca peered out from Jackson, speaking calmly to him.
“No, we are fine thank you... I’m sorry to have caused such a fuss.”
With that the Porter nodded at her, before he turned and stepped into the lift leaving Rebecca and Jackson alone in the corridor.
She turned and walked towards the apartment, as Jackson picked up his bags and followed her in closing the door behind him. He dropped the bags down as he had done when they had returned only days ago.
Jackson walked towards her, his arms encircling her as he held her close to him, just breathing her in.
Those long hours sat out in that hallway had told him how much she meant to him...
Out there all he could think of was never being able to put his arms around her or his lips on her again.
Earlier things had been so very different; he had waited eagerly for her to come home... Earlier he had been so happy, his life was so very different to how it felt right now.
His feelings towards her hadn’t changed. The lack of her arms around him told him she did; he didn’t let it stop him as he held her close to him.
He could feel her heart pounding. Jackson stood there holding her close to him, his head resting against her dirty blonde hair and his lips pressed against her temple; Jackson closed his eyes caught in the moment...
He felt nothing but anger, when he thought of that ‘turd’ Thomas Peak; he tried to suppress it. All that mattered now, was he had Rebecca back in his arms.
Jackson took her face in his hands. He looked at her. He was for once, lost for words as he looked into her eyes.... searching. All he could see was pain and he had caused it.
“Rebecca, I promise you, I have nothing to do with this, honestly... You have to believe me... You know everything there is to know about me. You have to believe me... Rebecca, I’ve never lied to you,” he pleaded with her.
As he spoke, he saw the tears pop out from her eyes again. His heart sank as he watched the tears trickle slowly down her cheeks as she tried to pull away from him.
“Rebecca, you know how much I love you. You’re the first woman I have ever said that to... You know this. I don’t understand how or why this has happened, but I can promise you,” Jackson looked into her eyes. “I had nothing to do with this... You must believe me Rebecca.”
