  Chapter One

Caroline felt the cold, damp dirt beneath her hands and feet. Nausea engulfed her, and she felt herself shaking as she tried to focus on her breathing. Brief images of Eloise in the archives flashed before her, but they were too quick for her to process—like someone trying to ignite a flame that kept going out. The concerned voices of Nadine, Aldrick, and Fleur sounded far away, muffled, as though they were talking to her through water. Feeling hands under her arms, Caroline let herself be pulled to her feet, and she raised her head and met Aldrick’s gaze. She was surprised to find concern in his expression, and as they looked at each other, her nausea fell away, and everything returned to normal.

“Are you okay?” Nadine asked, her hand still under Caroline’s arm. Turning to her friend, she gave a small smile. “Yeah. Sorry.” She turned to Fleur, who supported her from the other side.

“Can you see what’s happening in the archives?” Caroline asked her.

Fleur gently released Caroline, making sure she was steady before closing her eyes. A frown marred her forehead as her effort intensified. She shook her head and opened her eyes, “No. It’s weird. It’s like a black cloak has been draped over the archives, and I can’t see in.”

“Do you think Eloise has done something? The real Eloise?” Nadine asked.

“Well, she…is…a Voyante, but I’ve never seen such a powerful block before.”

“We need to get to the library,” Aldrick instructed. “Are you okay to move?”

Caroline nodded, suddenly feeling energized, and the four of them scurried out from underneath the bleachers and hurried back up the hill towards the academy. Caroline paused and looked up at the darkened windows of the top floor. For a moment, she could have sworn she’d seen a pale face looking out at them.

“Caroline, come on!” Nadine hissed at her, and she hurried after the others.

Aldrick held the door open as Nadine and Fleur hurried passed him, and he kept it open as he waited for Caroline, “Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked. She could only nod as she stepped past him, but the gentle touch of his hand on her back as he helped her pass didn’t go unnoticed. She felt a warmth spread outwards from the palm of her hand that seemed to push away her nerves, and she felt the loss as he withdrew his hand. Forcing the way it made her feel from her mind, she followed Nadine and Fleur as they crept along the corridor, trying to keep to the shadows as best as they could. Looking over her shoulder, Caroline saw Aldrick scanning the halls behind them. She wished they could go faster, but the last thing she wanted was to turn a corner and come face to face with Eloise—or worse still—her aunt.

They found Laurent pacing outside the entrance to the library. He was so focused on his own thoughts that he didn’t hear their approach until they stepped away from the wall and stood before him.

“Where’d you all come from?” He looked up in surprise before his expression turned sheepish at the realization he wasn’t much of a lookout. “Wait—why are you here? What is it? Is Tilda okay? What’s happened?”

“Keep your voice down,” Fleur said firmly as she walked over to him and wrapped her hands around his arm in an effort to calm him. “I lost my connection with Tilda, so we’ve come to make sure she’s okay.”

“What do you mean, you lost your connection?” His eyes widened.

“Something—someone—has cloaked the archives, preventing me from seeing in,” Aldrick explained.

“Eloise is in there,” Nadine added.

“Well, yeah. That’s the point, isn’t it? Tilda had to become Eloise to get into the archives and…”

“No, the real Eloise,” Caroline cut in.

“What? How? I’ve been here the whole time and haven’t seen anyone. If Corbin let his post slip, I swear I’ll…”

Fleur gripped his arm tighter, forcing him to pay attention. “We think she may have already been in the archives. Waiting.”

He frowned as he tried to process the theory. “How? Why?”

“We can work that out later, but for now, we need to get Corbin and find Tilda,” Caroline said. “Where’s Corbin?”

“This way.” Nadine led them down the corridor and around the corner to a set of stairs at the other end. They ran up the stairs two at a time and found Corbin leaning against the wall next to the closed library doors. His eyebrows shot up at their approach.

“So this can’t be good…” he said as he stood up.

“We have to get to Tilda,” Laurent said and reached to open the door. The doorknob wobbled but remained fixed in place. “Why is it locked?” He asked over his shoulder.

“Locked? Are you sure? The library doors are never locked.” Nadine stepped forward to try for herself.

“What do we do?” Fleur asked.

“We break-in,” Aldrick said while standing opposite the library doors, his feet shoulder-width apart, and his hands held out. Caroline looked on in awe as she watched his long fingers slowly move as though caressing an invisible object, and before she knew it, they heard a click, and the doors slowly opened inwards. He led them across the mezzanine and looked over the railing for any sign of movement below. The library was now empty, the only light coming from the dimmed lamps on the desks below and on the walls behind them.

“The archives are down that way.” Aldrick pointed to a row of shelves below, and they hurried down the staircase towards them. As they ran between the two, long rows of bookshelves, Caroline looked up at what appeared to be a blank wall, and she slowed her pace as they neared it. It was nothing remarkable—it just looked like every other wall in the library. She would never have guessed there was anything beyond it.

“Can you open it?” Laurent asked, and Nadine and Aldrick placed their palms flat against the wall, heads bowed, and eyes closed. In unison, the pair winced, as though experiencing brief pain before opening their eyes.

“Doesn’t look like it,” Aldrick replied, removing his hands from the wall and scowling at it as though it had intentionally slighted him.

“It must lock once the person has entered the archives,” Nadine suggested, looking equally annoyed.

“So what are we going to do? Tilda is stuck down there with Eloise!” Laurent demanded, his voice rising, and Fleur placed her hand on his arm to once again quieten him.

“You don’t think Eloise would hurt her, do you?” Caroline asked, not wanting to believe it possible, but she felt sick to her stomach that she’d put Tild

a in danger.

“No. At least I don’t think so. No, that would be ridiculous.” Aldrick seemed to be trying to convince himself as much as he was trying to convince them.

“I think what we do need to worry about is the fact Tilda just got busted by the person she was impersonating,” Corbin stated. “This is a worst-case scenario, guys.”

“Thanks for that. Helpful,” Laurent hissed.

Corbin shrugged, “So, what do we do?”

Before anyone could answer him, a faint grinding sound came from the wall, and they collectively stepped back as the panel recessed. Eloise greeted them as the panel slid to the side. The group froze. Eloise sighed, rolling her eye as she stepped aside. Tilda poked her head out from where she stood behind Eloise, once again in her own form, staring at her friends with wide eyes.

“Are you okay?” Laurent asked as he reached out and pulled her away from Eloise, lifting her face up to inspect her dazed expression. She just nodded.

Caroline forced herself to meet Eloise’s gaze. “This was all my idea. I take full responsibility.”

Eloise said nothing as she stepped into the library, turning her back to them as the panel closed behind her. Holding her hand up to the wall, a panel of glass revealed itself as it scanned her hand, locking the archives behind her. It felt to Caroline like they were holding their breaths collectively, waiting to see what was going to happen next.

Finally, Eloise turned around. “You do realize you’ve breached numerous academy rules?” she asked, looking at each one of them in turn. They all nodded solemnly.

“How did you know we would be here?” Caroline asked quietly.

“When you thought you were stealthily extracting strands of my hair, I jumped into your mind to find out why. Perhaps it would be prudent to have a mental shield in place next time you approach a Voyante in such a manner,” Eloise stated.

Caroline’s mouth fell open as she realized the impact of the rookie mistake she’d made.

“Don’t worry, C. Happens to the best of us,” Corbin declared, rubbing her shoulders like she was a boxer in a ring. She looked over to see Aldrick scowling at them and inwardly sighed.

“So, exactly how much trouble are we in?” Nadine asked.

“Do you have to tell the headmistress?” Fleur added.

Eloise gestured to the desks at the other end of the row, “I suggest we all go and take a seat.”

  Chapter Two

The group parted, making way for Eloise to walk between them before they followed without a sound. Eloise stood at the end of the desks; her arms elegantly crossed against her chest as she waited for them to sit. Tilda and Laurent sat to her right; Laurent’s hand draped protectively over the back of Tilda’s chair. Aldrick sat on the other side of him, leaving Caroline to sit between Corbin and Nadine on the opposite side.

“First, despite the fact what you did was incredibly wrong, not to mention irresponsible, I’m most impressed with the level of your skills, Tilda, Fleur, and Aldrick. Very impressive.” The group flashed questioning looks at each other as though unsure what to say, but Eloise continued.

“Secondly, you might be wondering if I knew what you were planning, why I didn’t stop you sooner.” She paused, but none of them dared speak. “I was intrigued to see how far each of you would go to help Caroline—how seriously you took her claims. I also needed you to see what was in the archives.”

“Huh?” Corbin said, saying what they were all thinking.

“You wanted us to find the prophecy? Why?” Caroline asked, “If my aunt, uh, the headmistress wanted me to know about it, then why didn’t she or my father just tell me about it?”

“Oh, you misunderstand me. The headmistress most certainly does not want you to know about the prophecy.” Eloise stated.

“Okay. I, for one, am confused,” Aldrick replied, his scowl deepening.

“Yeah, I have to say I agree,” Corbin added, leaning back in his chair and clasping his hands behind his head.

Eloise lowered her arms and leaned forward on the desk, her gaze skimming over their faces before lingering on Caroline’s. “How much was Tilda able to show you from the book?”

“Um, a little. Mostly just the prophecy. Then there was the portrait that looked just like me…” Caroline trailed off as the image of the old drawing came to mind, and it was all she could do not to shudder at the recollection.

“And what did you make of the prophecy?” Eloise asked.

Caroline frowned, “Honestly, I don’t really remember a lot of it. It was all a bit of a shock. I think it spoke of someone’s destiny or something.”

“Let me help you with that,” Fleur said as she placed her fingers on her temple, her head tilted to the side, and her eyes closed. Caroline found herself leaning forward in anticipation as Fleur recited the prophecy.

There is one who is destined to hold the power of all four factions in their hands.

This has been prophesized and will bring about a new age where those blessed by these powers will no longer need to hide in the shadows.

The Destined one will be all-powerful. Unchallenged. Immortal. The powers will not be born unto them but will be bequeathed to them as they cross the threshold into their own new age. The first three keys will manifest as mind, body, and spirit. The fourth will only unlock when the Destined has found the true counterpart of her soul. Only then will she become the embodiment of the powers of the factions. Only then will she unite them as one, bringing about a new era for mankind.”

“How did you remember that?” She asked in awe.

Fleur shrugged, “Benefit of being a Voyante. Anything you see in a vision, you remember.”

Caroline leaned back in her chair, impressed, but failing again to grasp the meaning of the prophecy. Eloise cleared her throat, looking at her expectantly. “Uh…it’s talking about someone with a lot of power. Is it referring to Tempeste?” Caroline attempted to answer.

“She wishes…” Eloise scoffed, her distaste at the mention of the name evident in the sneer that suddenly marred her normally poised features. Remembering herself, she took a deep breath regaining her composure as Caroline exchanged surprised looks with the others.

“The prophecy you’ve heard is indeed one of the prophecies Tempeste and The Entiere hold as their gospel, so to speak. It’s what they based their beliefs around. Tempeste strived to unlock the powers of each of the four factions, making her the most powerful person, not just in our community but in the world. Her followers believed, like most people who follow an individual seeking power, that the power would have a secondary effect. Perhaps she even promised them as much. That’s beside the point right now. Up until their disappearance, Tempeste, and her cronies stopped at nothing at the height of their power to try and force the realization of this prophecy. They went so far as to implement it in its most literal interpretation.”

“Wait, what do you mean by literal?” Nadine asked.

Eloise flicked a quick glance at the ceiling, her mouth briefly opening and closing as though she was trying to find the best way to explain it. “The prophecy mentions the first three keys would manifest as mind, body, and spirit. When Tempeste failed to unlock the keys with traditional methods, she enlisted her cult members with the task of physically trying to extract the abilities from those who’d already unlocked them.

“Whoa…you’re talking about torture, aren’t you?” Corbin stated, his hands pressed flat against the table as he pushed his back against the chair. Eloise nodded.

  “I don’t understand,” Tilda said.

“I’ll spare you the gory details. For the Voyante powers, they tried to extract the powers from their victim’s minds. The Surnatural powers were sought from the victim’s body and the Magique powers from their spirit, which they tried to draw out by manipulating the chakra system. A lot of good people were permanently disfigured, incapacitated in some way, and many even lost their lives.”
