Retreat, page 17
part #2 of Stormers Series
Before Hadley could process all Spike had relayed, he’d taken the coins and pulled the door shut, leaving them in the dark again.
Carl huffed out a breath. “This just keeps getting better and better.”
Brute snorted. “How’d we end up doing Kade’s job for him?”
Hadley raised an eyebrow as Carl stretched out his back and moved towards the door, leaving her rushing to catch up to him. “What does this mean?”
Brute was the one to respond. A solitary lantern hanging on the wall illuminated his creased forehead. “It means this is bigger than we thought; Cester needs to know immediately.”
Hadley’s disappointment at not being able to stop into the lower district was tempered when Carl looked over his shoulder and grinned. “Means Kade gets to keep his promise to you after all. He can bring you back here.”
Frosty breath left trails in the frigid air as Kade swung the axe. A knot formed on his forehead as he worked. He was almost at full strength again, but each day that passed marked another day that Carl, Brute and Hadley hadn’t returned.
Every day, he found himself working outside, finding as many reasons as he could to keep busy while he waited for news.
The frown grew as he noted the way the sun slanted on the melting snow around him. Spring edged closer, bringing with it the thaw that signalled just how much time had passed since he’d arrived with Hadley with the promise of safety and assistance. Neither of which he’d been able to keep. Both of which was causing liquid guilt to rise every time he thought about the promises he’d made to her.
He shook his head, muttering to himself as he spilt the final pieces of the pile. Kade slammed the axe into the chopping block, bending to stack the wood into a neater pile to carry to the shed beside him.
A solid hit to his backside caused him to drop the wood and whirl around. His lips twitched into an easy smile as Meg stood, one hand on her hip, the other holding another projectile ready to fire. He ducked to the side before she could throw it and rolled forwards, scooping up snow in his gloved hand before she could pitch another.
He rose to his knee and aimed for her back as she ran in the opposite direction. Kade jumped up and gave chase as she ran towards the gates, her laughter infectious as Ma Hamlin and Todd stepped aside, smiles wide on their faces as he ran at a clip after her. “You better run!” he yelled.
Meg pivoted abruptly and ducked behind the kennels, causing him to slow down. Thinking he’d outdone her, he pressed his back against the kennel wall and crept along, snowball ready the moment she popped her head around the side.
The slightest movement coming from behind alerting him to an ambush, Kade spun on his feet only to receive a solid hit to his face, leaving him shaking off the snow.
He checked the area, and finding only trees, a smile lit his face as he jerked his head upwards, and quickly pulled himself up the side of the flat roofed kennel, so he could see better who was attacking him.
Kade dropped to his stomach, the slightest twinge in his ribs acknowledging the damage he needed to be wary of, he watched the tree for the culprit.
Sure enough, from his vantage point, he spied a copper-haired boy hiding behind the thick tree trunk. Cole was lining up to fire another, most likely thinking Kade was still on the ground.
Kade chuckled lightly then dragged his fingers through the snow coating the roof, and shifted slightly so he could pelt Cole, then search for Meg.
He’d lined up when an excited bark in the distance called his attention from his target.
His head jerked in the direction of the gates, and before he could even think about being careful, Kade made it the ground, paying little heed to the uncomfortable warnings his body was sending him.
He met Meg at the gates, breathless, his heart thudding in his chest as he squinted against the low sun to see who was approaching.
Meg blew out a breath, as Cester came out of the main house behind them, anxiety etched on his face. “What do you see? Is that Luna barking?
Kade nodded his head when more barks came from behind him, and the rest of pack arrived at the gates in a swirling mass of fur and wagging tails.
He grinned sidelong at Meg and found her smiling back at him. They both knew why the pack was so frenzied. One of their own was coming home.
And from the molten levels of anticipation brewing in his stomach, and the way his pulse was thrumming in his veins, Kade knew exactly how they felt.
The second he saw Hadley, he was going to work on keeping his promise to his sister. I’m going to make this day count.
To be continued in Book Three, Receive.
