As the life seeped from him, enveloped in darkness, Connor thought back to that moment, the moment he received the call telling him of his family's demise, three hours after dinner with Alice. He had a missed call when he turned the phone back on, returned it to the hospital and the rest was history.
He remembered his thoughts that night, ones drenched in guilt, horror, and loss, the only pure, unselfish thought that he'd ever had.
I lost them. And in the process, I lost too.
No one ever wins.
Connor's eyes fluttered and he looked up. The black mist above him twirled and Susan's face appeared briefly, looking down at him. Her eyes were black, deep with evil, that smile, the hundreds of teeth in a mouth that normally contained much less, the tongue that seemed too green to be real, the lips that was sharp and pointed, angular, not soft and lush – all terrified him. Connor felt his heart slow, give out and as his eyes closed, he heard his dead wife whisper something in his ear.
"This is your fresh start, a new beginning."
