The 22 songs on CD1, Originals, are exactly that, featuring vocals by Gainsbourg, Bardot, Birkin, Nana Mouskouri, Alain Chamfort and Anna Karina. The 24 different songs on CD2 - ‘Variations’ - include cover versions taken from various international Serge tribute albums (Placebo; Elysian Fields; Mick Harvey; Kenzo Saeki; Michelle Flyn; Kahimi Karie; Carla Bruni; Howie B; a couple from Jane Birkin) plus instrumental versions of 13 songs: L’Hotel Particulier/ Angoisse/ Erotico-Tico/ Black March/ Ah! 2010 SERGE GAINSBOURG POET AND PROVOCATEUR (CD, Cherry Red Records ACEM180CD) A single CD with 32 songs, all dating back to 1958-9, Gainsbourg’s early days - presumably the reason for the sepia packaging sleeve and liner booklet. Some are live tracks, some studio, and three come from the soundtrack he wrote for the 1959 film L’Eau A La Bouche and five from the 1959 film Voulez-Vous Danser Avec Moi in which he made his screen debut, acting alongside Brigitte Bardot (it was where the future lovers first met). Just over half the songs feature Gainsbourg on vocals; the others were covers from the time by Juliette Gréco; Hugues Aufray; Les Frères Jacques; Alain Goraguer et son Orchestre; Pia Colombo; Hélène Martin.
