  Chapter 1

“Heya, byutful. Why don’tchu come sit wiff me?”

“Jason, the party started only twenty minutes ago and you’re already geared up to pass out. I prefer my men just slightly above slobbering drunk,” Katie laughed. He slapped his chest in a come on, give me a chance way. Katie shook her head and wiggled through party members, giving hellos, hugs, and nods to her friends as she made her way to the kitchen.

She found her hostess hovering over a large pot on the stove. Janet’s eyes lit up. “Thank God you’re here. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

“Looks to me like you’re stirring something,” Katie said, the corner of her mouth breaking into a grin. Janet had been her closest friend since college. They’d shared a dorm room together for two years, then an apartment for another four. They’d laughed at how their relationship was like something out of a movie. But their relationship was strong, had endured its own strand of horrors.

Janet rolled her eyes. “Whatever, smart ass. I just stopped on my way through the kitchen to make sure the sauce wasn’t burning. But really I was looking for you.” Katie sobered at the serious look in her friend’s face. She came closer and put a hand on her shoulder.

  “What’s the matter, Jane?”

“You’re not gonna like it,” her friend mumbled.

“People usually don’t like bad news, Jan. Just lay it on me,” she said with a heavy sigh.

Janet looked around the kitchen then leaned in close. Her eyes softened with concern. “Jack Dempsey is coming tonight.”

The floor dropped out from beneath her. It took her two tries to close her mouth and another minute to wrap her mind around the words.

“No, no. No way, Janet. He’s never been back. He’s never coming back.” The same words she’d cried after he’d gone.

“No, he is. Greg just told me, honey. I’m so sorry. He said he saw him at the store and invited him to the party tonight.”

Katie was numb. The feeling in her body just disappeared, but her mind was reeling, fast and hard. She’d felt like this before. This horrible since of panic. After he left her four years ago. Four long years. A hot pain burned in the back of her throat.

She had to get out of here now.

“I have to go.” She didn’t wait for a reply, but ran out the back door. She heard voices, someone call her name, but kept going. She pulled her keys from her pocket and ran to her car.

There was a burning wetness threatening to escape her eyes. She gritted her teeth to keep it at bay. She’d cried enough over him. She wouldn’t do that anymore.

She just turned the lock, when a deep, hauntingly familiar voice stopped her.

  Chapter 2

Katie turned as if in slow motion.

“Leaving so soon, Katie?” She recognized that voice. Deep with a rough edge to it. Yet when she turned around, she still hoped it was someone else who’d be behind her.

Oh, God. It was him. Jack Dempsey. Her heart pounded so hard in her chest, she put her hand over it to keep it inside. Her watery eyes traced over his face. The past four years hadn’t changed him much. They’d only made his hard features rougher, more intense. The crease around his eyes was deeper; the lines around his mouth more severe. He was everything she remembered, yet so much better.

“Jack.” Her voice was a croak over the dry heat in her throat. She blinked to push back the unshed tears.

His eyes took her in. He always could make her feel like he was devouring her just by looking at her. “Katie, you look good.” He kept his hands in his jean pockets, his stance wide. He even wore the same beaten, brown leather jacket.

“Thanks, now excuse me, but I have to go.” She turned to escape, but he stopped her with a strong hand on her shoulder. The touch was gentle, but froze her in place.

“Running away, Katie? I don’t remember you being a coward. Where’s the woman that used to watch horror movies by herself at night? The one who wasn’t afraid to stand up and take charge when someone was hurt or needed help.”

Her hand clenched to keep from hitting him. She snapped. “I’m still her, Jake. I just don’t like you, and I really don’t want to talk to you. Now if you don’t mind, take your hand off me. I’m out of here.” She looked sharply at the hand he still had on her shoulder. His jaw flexed but he removed it.

“I remember a time when you loved me.”

She laughed bitterly. “Yeah, and I remember a time when you loved me, but that didn’t stop you from leaving, did it?”

He cracked the knuckles of his hand. The old habit of his had her heart weighing heavily in her chest.

“I didn’t come here to do this, dammit. We need to talk, Katie. Can’t we just do that?” His mouth softened for a moment. Oh, God, this was all wrong. This was exactly what she’d always wanted. For him to come back, beg for her, tell her he still loved her. She’d stopped hoping for that two years ago.

“I can’t,” she said, her voice breaking.

His voice was a growl. “God dammit, Katie.” Then his big arms wrapped around her.

For long moments she didn’t move, just felt. He was so warm, almost hot. Her body fit along his perfectly, familiarly. Being in his arms was a blessing and a curse. It was so damn good to be back, a part of her just wanted to forget that he’d ever hurt her. Forget that when he’d left, he’d taken her heart with it.

But he held her so close, like he never wanted to let go, and she couldn’t stop herself from reaching around him and holding him back.

“Katie.” The one word held so much longing and passion; it broke the last of her resistance.

She pulled back. Blue eyes stared back at hers. “I hate you for what you did.”

His face turned into a mask of pain. “I know, baby. I hate me, too. I’ve never stopped loving you. Do you know how many times I called just to hear your voice on the answering machine?” Her eyes widened in surprise. “I knew you were at work so I’d call and call. Four long years, Katie. Tell me you still love me.” The last was said with a dark growl. He pressed his hips against hers and she felt the unmistakable hardness of his erection.

Her mind was wheeling a mile a minute and her heart felt torn, excited, and scared all at the same time. But he was right; she never had been a coward. She lifted her arms around his neck and pulled him down to her. His eyes darkened and he crowded her against her car.

He whispered her name, a dark promise. Then his mouth captured hers. Her heart stuttered a beat. He angled his head and slid his tongue inside. She made a soft sound in the back of her throat as his lips pressed harder against hers. Her body burned under his touch like liquid fire. She pressed her hips against his, seeking out his cock.

He tore his mouth away from hers. He was breathing hard and fast. She started to protest but he shook his head hard. He looked around then spotting the tree line behind Janet’s house. He grabbed her hand, and pulled her after him.

  “Are we going to—?”

“Damn right we are.” Katie stumbled behind him, trying to keep up with his much longer stride. They broke through the tree line and then her back was biting into tree bark. His mouth fell on hers, licking and teasing. His hands were all over her. Stroking and squeezing her ass and hips, her breasts and thighs.

She ran her hands down his chest, slipped under his shirt and ran them back up. His stomach clenched and rippled beneath her fingertips.

Leaning down to his ear, he stroked her pussy through her jeans as he spoke. “God, I missed you, baby. I need to bury myself inside you and remember what you feel like. God how I’ve thought about you, dreamed about you.” He stroked her pussy through her jeans as he spoke.

His fingers opened her jeans and slipped inside. He slid under her panties and found her embarrassingly wet heat. He stroked her soft soaking folds with a sure touch, then circled her clit and dipped inside her.

His face was a mask of pain and pleasure. “So fucking tight.” He pumped inside her, doing to her what he wanted to do with his dick. Katie moaned and gasped, her hips rocking against him. He nuzzled her shirt up with his mou

th and dipped his tongue beneath her bra to lick a hard nipple.

“Jake! Jake, please. I’m going to come.” Her breath hitched when his thumb circled her clit and his fingers pumped faster.

“Do it, baby. I want to feel you come apart on my hand,” he said around her nipple. Katie was lost to the unstoppable force moving through her. She squeezed his shoulders in her hands and cried out as pleasure built high, then flew apart inside her. She trembled hard against his hand, gasping as her orgasm tore through her.

Jake groaned. “I can feel your cunt sucking on me. Dammit I can’t wait anymore, Katie.”

He pulled back from her and tore open his pants. His cock sprang forward eagerly. Katie grabbed him in a soft fist, pumping him, squeezing him, relearning the soft, steel feel of him. “I want to come inside you, not in your hand, baby.” His voice was deeper now, huskier.

Katie didn’t even think about it. She just dropped to her knees and licked a wet path up his cock. His breath caught, so she licked the round head with a flick of her tongue. He tasted exactly as she remembered, musky and pure male. His hands dropped helplessly to her hair. She bowed her head down and back up his long length. He pulsed hotly in her mouth. She could tell he was close by his breathing and in the way his thighs trembled under her hands.

“Dammit, I said that’s enough,” he growled and pulled himself out from her wet mouth. Katie gasped when he pushed her back, knocking her to the ground. He kneeled down and pulled her jeans down her legs, her shirt only made it up past her breasts. Katie helped by pulling her bra down so her breasts spilled free. Jake saw them, saw her dark pink nipples, and licked his lips. He tore off his jacket and pushed his jeans down to his knees.

“Jack. I’ve missed you so much. I’ve never stopped loving you.”

“That’s good, baby. Real good.” He grabbed her thighs and pushed her open wide. Kneeling between her legs, Jake caged her small body in with his arms, his hard chest meshing against her breasts. He positioned himself, aimed, and pushed inside her, squeezing past her tight muscles.

“Oh, God!” Katie felt like she was being impaled. Her body couldn’t stop moving. The pressure inside her was ready to pop. Her hips rocked, her legs climbed over his thighs and held on. He buried his face in her neck, and pounded into her with hard, driving strokes.

His voice was uneven against her neck. “Forgot how tight your cunt was, baby. Never felt anything…aaaah…so good.” He was pushing her higher and faster towards another peak. She held on tight, pulling up his shirt so she could feel the hot skin of his back.

“Baby, baby! You’re making me come!” Katie fought to catch her breath as the trembling in her thighs started. He groaned loudly and fucked her harder, faster, pushing her along the grass with each stroke.

His hands cupped her head, spread through her hair, and locked her in place. The touch, the position was so familiar, so good. She didn’t last any longer. He fucked through her tight flesh with such vigor that she was thrown into a climax. Her pussy seized over his tunneling cock, her legs wrapped tightly around his, her hips shuddered hard again and again as waves of pleasure rippled through her body.

“Oh, yeeeah. That’s it baby. Come all over my cock. Fuck yeees,” he grunted as a fresh wave of her cream flooded his cock. He hammered into her then, his hand reaching to squeeze her thigh, press her open further. Her thigh burned, but she didn’t care. She was open and vulnerable to him. Ready to give anything he wanted.

She chanted his name as his thrusts grew erratic. He lost his rhythm, his breaths loud exclamations against her ear. A bead of sweat dropped against her cheek. He shoved in two more times then thickened and pulsed, jetting hot streams of cum inside her.

“Oh, God. How can it still be so good?” she whispered. Her body felt loose and limber. He’d better have a wheelbarrow to move her because there was no way could lift a pinky after that.

“Because it’s us baby. It will always be like that with us.”

She looked up into his eyes and saw his expression turn serious. He was still inside her; she could feel his essence mixing with her own.

“I’m sorry I went to Afghanistan. I’m so fucking sorry. I’ve regretted it every damned day I was there, Katie. You were right, they could have gotten someone else to oversee the rebuilding, but I’d wanted in on it because it was my idea. It was stupid and my pride speaking. And I lost you in the process. I never want that to happen again. Do you understand me? You’re going to marry me, Katie, and I’m never letting you go.”

A lone teardrop fell down her face. The smile that started was tumultuous but settled into a wide, full-blown smile.

She grabbed his face and pressed a dozen kisses over it. “I love you so much, Jake. But I’m not going to marry you until you ask me right.”

He laughed as he stood and pulling her up into his arms. He looked younger when he smiled, freer. “My beautiful Katie, will you marry me and keep me from being a miserable bastard for the rest of my life?”

She laughed and kissed him. “I will if you promise to watch scary movies with me at night.”

“Deal.” They kissed, and the world faded away.
