Chapter 1
Jack - Then
Sex.
This entire room smells of vanilla and sex. Her red hair tickles my chest, and every little puff of warm breath reminds me of how strong her lungs are; screaming out my name as she comes on my cock. I will have to soundproof the house if we keep this up.
Pulling her tight against my side, I feel myself getting hard again.
Who would have thought that Harper and I would have made it this far? To my bed, that is. It wasn’t for my lack of trying, but she had other plans. The truck before dinner, the coat closet at Waterside, and pressed up against the patio door in my kitchen.
Despite feeling drained, I can’t get enough of her.
Placing soft kisses across my chest, she traces the black ink with her soft lips before pushing away to sit on the edge of the bed. Reaching down, she picks up her lace thong and slips it over her delicious hips before tossing on the button-up shirt I wore earlier in the evening.
Propping myself up, I lean against the headboard and tuck my arms behind my head, my eyes dragging down her body.
“My shirt looks good on you.”
“You should see it off.” She turns, giving me a wink before opening the door to the hall. The sway of her hips draws my attention to the shadows of my fingertips. Bruises forming from how hard I gripped her.
How hard she begged me to.
“Come back to bed.” I pat the now empty spot next to me.
“I need to pee,” she says. Not surprising. We have been locked in my bedroom for hours.
“Best time to fuck, then. All the added pressure.”
Turning around, she leans against the frame, all five-foot-six of her. Her smooth legs cross, pinching her thighs together. As she places a hand on her hip nonchalantly, she levels me with a serious stare. But her nipples betray her, poking against the fabric. She wants more and my cock twitches in response.
“Are you sure you’re up for it, Jack?”
This fucking woman.
She shows no sign of stopping, and I am not going to pass up any chance with her. “Oh Sweets, I’m up for it. But don’t make me beg.”
Pushing away from the door, she rounds the foot of my bed and waits, her head slightly cocked to the side. I kick off the blanket to show her I am ready and willing, my cock standing tall, thick, and proud. But if she wants it, she will have to come and take it.
And quick, because my resolve won’t last much longer.
“I’d like to see you on your knees, Jack.”
The corner of her mouth twitches before a smirk forms. Tracing her fingers up her sides, they meet in the middle as she pops a single button on my shirt. Her blue eyes drag over my body lazily, like she has all the time in the world. She sucks in her bottom lip, pinching it between her teeth.
With a skill I acquired as a young man, I flex my cock and he jolts up as if to say Hello.
She doesn’t flinch, but pops another button, then another. Before long, the shirt hangs open, exposing the curves of her breasts. The pale skin, smooth and supple, with tiny freckles randomly placed. A map to all her tender parts. It feels like hours since I had the pleasure of tweaking her nipples before pulling them into my mouth. My hand twitches, aching to touch her again.
A strained breath catches in my throat. She is fucking stunning, and I will never know why she chose to finally say yes to dinner with me tonight. Hell, if I think luck had anything to do with it, I should buy a lottery ticket and ask her to move in.
This woman is mine. I fucking know it.
The mattress dips underneath her weight as she slowly crawls next to me. I can’t pry my eyes from her naked body and the smooth skin between her legs. She must have slipped out of her panties while I wasn’t paying attention.
A kiss on my thigh, a graze across my cock. She inches her way up my body, before throwing her leg over me and resting just above my hips. Her center is poised directly over my cock. All she needs to do is sit and I will be buried in her for the fourth time tonight.
Her breasts push into my chest; her nipples so hard they threaten to cut my skin. I fucking ache as I fight the urge to thrust up. That resolve fading away, and the need to beg on the tip of my tongue.
“You want it, don’t you?” she taunts. And I am too weak to wait for her to break.
“Hell yes.” My cock brushes against her pussy, hot and wet.
Trailing kisses along my jawline, she nips my ear lobe, triggering a growl from deep within my chest. Breathing out her command, she says, “Beg.”
“I told you; I don’t do that.” I am a fucking idiot. I have no idea what I am trying to prove here. Harper can twist me around her little freckled finger, and I will beg for more.
“Then ask.” She moves slightly, causing the tip of my cock to rub against her clit, sending tingles through her body. She trembles as if her resolve is about to break as well.
“I want my dick buried in you, Harper.”
Without hesitation, she sinks down on my cock. No need to adjust to my size since we have been fucking all night. The warmth of her pussy envelops me, sending shockwaves through my body.
“That’s not a fucking question, Jack.” She digs her fingertips into my chest and leans over, pressing her lips against mine.
Determination out the window, my hips ram upward to match the rhythm she sets. Snaking my hand between us, I press against her lower stomach, feeling where my cock hits on the inside with every thrust.
Her breath is short and raspy, but I know I heard it. I heard it just before she came; my name on her lips, followed by one sweet word.
“More.”
Chapter 2
Harper - Now
If I ever move again in my life, it will be too soon.
The catastrophic state of my new corner office is enough to send me into a panic attack. The wall of custom filing cabinets, courtesy of Aubrey’s dad, is in complete disarray. Drawers are pulled out and doors open wide. I take the moment to sit back on my heels and figure out my game plan. This is a step up from the old metal filing cabinets in my previous office.
I grab the draft paper I stole from the printer room and study the organization chart I planned. I’m not sure how everything got so mixed up from just a few offices away. This is going to take all day to sort out.
“That’s my girl, always kneeling for me.”
Jack strides into the room, with Honey trailing behind him. She finds her bed in the corner behind my desk and flops down with a humph. Her golden fur is all aglow from the sun shining on that exact spot. That is why I placed her bed there first thing this morning.
“What do you have there?” I say, motio ning to the white paper bag in Jack’s hand and ignoring the inappropriate comment. I might be head of Human Resources here at Lawson Building Company, but Jack always gets a free pass.
Offering his free hand, he tugs me to my feet. “Did you forget our lunch date?” Jack asks as he takes a seat in front of my desk. Leaning back, he crosses his legs at the ankles and folds his arms across his chest.
His dark curls frame his face and the stubble along his jawline gives an air of roughness to him, but he is the most playful man I know. Case in point—the raised eyebrow and crooked smile he is giving me while he waits for me to catch up to him.
Looking around, I find my phone on the edge of the desk and unlock it with my thumbprint. Damn it. My reminder didn’t come through because my notifications are set to silent.
“I didn’t forget.” Rounding my desk, I give Honey a few quick scratches behind the ears and then take a seat across from Jack. “I can’t believe I lost the morning.”
“You’ve been hard at it for a few hours. Looks like you made a dent in the boxes. Only another, what, seventy to go?” A smirk plays on his face as he gestures towards the bankers boxes filled with files waiting to be organized.
He is pushing my buttons and knows it.
“Shut it,” I say, grabbing at the bag and pulling out our food. I hand over Jack’s burger and fries before flipping open my container. The smell of the crispy bacon makes me salivate before I have a chance to shove the first half of the club sandwich in my mouth. Twisting off the top of my water bottle, I gulp half of it down before picking up the other half of my sandwich.
“Slow down or you’re going to choke.”
“I’m starving,” I say mid-chew. “Are you going to eat that?”
“What? My lunch? I was planning on it,” he snickers as I swipe a few of his fries before finishing my sandwich.
“I should have gotten fries. Oh, and a milkshake,” saying absently.
Jack unwraps his burger and takes his first a bite. I am tempted to ask for a bite when he wipes the corner of his mouth with his napkin and pulls out his phone. He taps away at the screen before talking to himself. “Oh, that makes sense.”
“What makes sense?” I swipe a few more fries and toss one to Honey. With my lunch eaten, and Jack now guarding his fries, I toss the garbage and grab a few files that need to be sorted before getting dropped off to Wolf, my boss and owner of the company.
“Nothing, just needed to check something.” He turns off the screen and sets the phone down. “I have Silas’s bike in the truck. Remind me before the day is done and I’ll toss it in your car.”
“Will do.”
Opening up the task app on my phone, I add the reminder. With everything I need to do throughout the day, keeping the team here in line, meetings, co-parenting with Jack, it all gets to be too much for me to keep straight. Who am I kidding? I couldn’t keep it all straight before I moved to Styre Cove a few years ago. Add mom brain and I am screwed.
“Are you sure you can’t just move in? It would save us so much time traveling back and forth.” A familiar smile fills his face. This is not the first time he has asked me to move in with him, and not likely to be the last.
“Your cottage is too small, Jack,” I tell him for the umpteenth time.
“The realtor called it cozy.”
I roll my eyes. “He lied.”
“No, he didn’t. Name a place that is cozier than mine.”
I can’t.
The 1960’s white-washed cottage is truly a hidden gem. It is full of character and situated perfectly on the water’s edge, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is quintessentially Maine. Add in a few lobster traps and it would make for a beautiful postcard.
On the other hand, my place is a recently built townhouse I rent from Wolf. It has three bedrooms, a living room, a den, and two full baths. For what it lacks in charm, it makes up for in square footage. The deal I arranged with Wolf was too good to pass up, even though it’s more space than we need.
“You could move in with me,” I counter.
Jack slaps his knee and extends his hand across the desk, blocking the folder I just opened. “Deal. Shake on it.”
“Get out of here.” I playfully slap his hand away. “I have to get this proposal sorted out if we want to have food on our plates in a few months.”
“Proposal?” He waggles his eyebrows at me. A sore spot, I know. “Oh, is that Gain’s contract?” he says, reaching for it before I slam my hand down on top of the file.
“Jack, get out of here. You’ll know more when Wolf wants you to know.”
“You’re lucky you’re hot when you’re pissed at me,” he says while pushing away from the desk. “Otherwise, I might be tempted to toss you over my lap and spank the crank out of you.”
Shaking my head, “You, sir, are a hopeless flirt.” I walk around the desk and place my hand on his lower back, encouraging him out of the office. “And don’t make promises you can’t keep. We both know that I would be the one doing the spanking,” I say with a wink.
For the most part, I believe that. I tend to take charge in areas of my life, and Jack has always seemed happy to come along for the ride. But there are moments, moments like this one where I see a little devil inside of him that wants to break free of the happy-go-lucky best friend I have had for years.
As we stand face to face, Jack hesitates for a moment, almost waiting to say something. He leans in, and his warm breath caresses my cheek as our mouths hover mere inches apart.
“Come on, honey,” he whispers, urging me on, and my heart skips a beat.
Where did that come from?
We have never denied the attraction we have–had, but the Jack charm is strong today. As he inches closer, my heart pounds in my chest and I swallow loudly. My mouth is suddenly dry as his eyes dart to my mouth where my lip it pinched between my teeth.
A wet nose brushes against my hand, and the connection between us breaks. I can feel my eyes rolling back too far in my skull.
Honey.
“Get out of here, Jack.”
“See you at the one-thirty meeting? Wolf said he has a big announcement.”
“I’ll be there.”

I snag my regular seat next to Winnie after grabbing two fresh-baked cinnamon rolls courtesy of Mable’s Diner. The gooey cinnamon sugary center pops out easily before I toss it into my mouth; closing my eyes, I savor the flavors. Swallowing it down with a few gulps of water, I pop out the center of the second one, leaving the outer layers to pick at later. There’s no time to waste when they are still warm.
Nate saunters into the conference room, followed by Jack and Rusty. Jack grabs a bottle of water from the sideboard before making his way to the table, stopping in his tracks before sitting down. With a curious expression, he whispers across the table, “You can’t seriously still be hungry.”
If looks could kill, he would be nothing but a pile of steaming ash on the floor. He backs away with his hands raised in surrender before sitting directly across the table from me.
That’s fucking right.
I break off another piece of the roll and place it on my tongue, exaggerating my moans of delight in victory.
“Where is everyone?” Nate says, looking at his watch. “I was planning on making a grand entrance.”
“No, that is what we are doing.” Wolf’s tall figure fills the doorway into the room.
As a boss, Wolf has been beyond fair and accommodating. Especially with me. After I joined Lawsons Building Company shortly after it opened four years ago, he has been like a doting older brother. Similar to my own, but without Eben’s gruffness.
The last few months for him have been horrible. After falling for Aubrey, and fucking up and losing her, he fell into a downward spiral filled with too much alcohol and bar fights.
But the man before us is clean and sober. The gray circles and sunken cheeks have been replaced, revealing the handsome man he truly is. Back to normal, even with his standard air of arrogance and a glint of mischief in his eyes.
He strides into the room as someone follows closely behind him. Another employee running late to the meeting, I suppose.
“Hi everyone!” Fingers laced with Wolf’s, Aubrey steps out from behind him.
Grand entrance indeed!
“Aubrey!” Winnie shouts.
