  Chapter 1

  Ella

I watched the realtor drive away, clutching the key in the palm of my hand. When her car disappeared around the corner, I turned back to the small house I’d just signed the papers for--a rent-to-own contract for one year, and then a decision would have to be made. But that one year would give me time to determine if the new beginning I sought in a new town would become my permanent home. A place where I could set down roots. I hoped so, because what I’d seen so far of Georgetown, Maine--population just over a thousand--was exactly what I’d been looking for.

The location of my small house was ideal. What had once been a rustic summer camp had been converted into a year-round dwelling. It was situated on a lakefront lot surrounded by plenty of mature trees that offered some seclusion. There were houses on either side of me, I could see them through the trees, but we were spaced far enough apart that privacy wouldn’t be an issue. I had my own, private little beachline, complete with a wharf. But what really held my interest about the house was the glass-enclosed back porch that overlooked the lake. That was where I planned to work.

Nothing like a peaceful setting, and maybe the call of a loon or two, to get the creative juices flowing. As a writer, that was important.

I took a deep breath and turned back to my SUV, opened the hatchback, and reached for the first box. I’d known that it would be late afternoon when I arrived, so I’d made sure the box with the bedroom linens had been placed for easy access at the rear. Everything I owned was in my vehicle. I was thankful that the owners of the house had left a few pieces of furniture to get me started, a bed being one. With a smile I swung around to walk to the front door, suddenly coming to an abrupt halt and dropping the box in my arms with a light scream.

The biggest, ugliest, most frightening dog I’d ever seen in my life was standing there, watching me with a menacing stare that caused a chill to run through me. He’d just breached the trees that divided my property from the house on the other side, and while I would have liked to believe that he was just as surprised to see me as I was him, and that this was why he was frozen, I wasn’t about to assume anything. For what seemed like eternity we stood there sizing each other up, barely blinking, much less breathing. Somewhere in my subconscious I recalled someone telling me once that you shouldn’t show fear when you came across a dog you don’t know. But that was hard to do when being confronted by a huge, black beast that looked like a demon who’d come straight from hell.

I glanced toward my neighbor’s house but didn’t see anyone outside. I swallowed nervously, and that’s when I noticed it--movement coming from the back end of the dog. He had a tiny stub for a tail, and it was wagging just as fast as it could go. Did a wagging tail always imply a friendly dog? In my book it did. I crouched down slowly and held my hand out toward him. “Hello, boy. Are you a nice little doggie, or are you going to eat me for dinner?” If he charged, I could always jump into the back of my car.

At the slightest encouragement, the beast bolted toward me, and it was all I could do not to turn and run in a panic. He nearly knocked me over when he threw his weight against me and began to lick my face as if I were his long-lost best friend. All the while, his tiny tail continued to wag.

“You’re a big, old softie, aren’t you baby?” I laughed, rubbing his head and neck down as he continued to bathe my cheeks and beneath my chin. “You scared the dickens out of me! What’s your name, huh?” I reached for the tag that hung from the collar that was wrapped around his muscular throat. Just as I read his name on the large silver motorcycle tag, I heard someone call out for him.

“Demo! Where the fuck are you, boy?”

I glanced up to see the branches of a tree pushed aside and the most gorgeous male specimen I’d ever seen sauntering into my yard, looking just as dangerous and threatening as his dog had. He was big and tall. Like, Paul Bunyan big. Heavy with muscle, his thick thighs filled out his faded jeans nicely, tapering down to the big, chunky boots he had on. His t-shirt was stretched across his massive chest and emphasized the definition of his hard pecs. The short sleeves fit snug around his bulging biceps, and I couldn’t stop my gaze from wandering down the beautiful veins in his tanned arms. I’d always been a sucker for muscular arms and big hands.

Intense, chocolate-coated eyes zeroed in on me and Demo. His square jawboned expression was neutral so I couldn’t tell what he thought about finding what was probably his dog and me on the ground together. For all I knew, he was looking for a friend named Demo. A sexy scruff showcased a mouth pressed with displeasure at what he was seeing.

“Hi,” I smiled, getting to my feet and brushing off the back of my pants. “Demo and I are getting acquainted.”

“I see that,” he responded in the kind of raspy voice that made me think of whiskey and early mornings, and caused a mild stir in my lower region. “Demo’s usually like me and doesn’t make friends very easily.”

I could tell that he wasn’t kidding. Most people would crack a smile after saying something like that, to show you that they were joking, but not Mr. Sexy. There was nothing friendly in the eyes moving over me. Nothing sexual, either. I wondered what he found about me that was lacking. My red corkscrew curls? My freckles? Maybe he didn’t find curvy chicks appealing.

I decided to not let his indifference bother me and kept the smile on my face. “Well, I’m glad he finds me worthy enough to break the mold.”

“Demo, come!” he demanded, and the dog immediately obeyed.

He turned to go back the way he’d come, and for a second my mouth dropped in astonishment. Okay, he might be a sexy, give-the-girl-an-orgasm-with-just-a-look-God, but he was the world’s biggest jerk. “Nice to meet you!” I called after him as he disappeared through the trees. “Asshole,” I finished beneath my breath. What was wrong with me anyway? Frig that, what was wrong with him?

I picked up the box of bedroom linens and headed inside.

  Chapter 2

  Wolfe

I relaxed back in my lawn chair with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Demo was lying underneath the big maple tree off to the side of me, watching the activity in the water. He was used to it. I’d invited my brothers and some friends over for a Fourth of July cookout, something I did every year. Actually, we didn’t have an official clubhouse, though we talked about it we just hadn’t gotten around to doing something about it. Most weekends my brothers were here.

The sun glistened off the lake, but I was still able to make out Bear and Hannah going at it beneath the branches of a tree growing over the water. Bear was my VP and best friend. We’d grown up together, had gone to school together--hell, we’d even enlisted in the Marines together. We’d gone in as boys straight out of high school and returned home toughened men full of bitterness and unrest. Let’s face it, it hadn’t been summer camp. Most who were lucky enough to return home were different than they’d been when they’d left.

Hannah was one of our club women. We had three, and referred to them as “sweet tarts” because it was nicer than calling them club whores. She was young, but not so young that she didn’t know what she was doing, and as the newest sweet tart she was a favorite with my brothers. Especially with Bear, who couldn’t seem to keep his hands off the redhead. If my brother wasn’t careful, he’d find himself with an old lady, because these bitches were crafty and deceitful once they thought they’d gotten their hooks into you.

Bear should have known by now not to single out any of the girls. I only wish I’d been smart enough to follow my own advice when I’d hooked up with Teresa.

Their vigorous movements produced waves in the water and drew the attention of some of the others. It wouldn’t be long before there would be more than one couple going at it, thanks to the cover of the water. I smirked as I brought my beer to my lips and downed a healthy swallow. I saw Ginger give me “the look” and shook my head. I wasn’t in the mood for a sweet tart right now. She shrugged and turned to Tank.

“Hey, Prez, you see the hottie living next door?”

I followed Eagle with my eyes as he came around my chair and sank down into the one next to me. I’d been wondering where he was. He had to be talking about the redhead who’d moved in next door two weeks before. “I hadn’t noticed,” I lied. I had noticed. Who the hell wouldn’t? She had a pair of tits on her that drew a man’s eye quicker than lightning. But the fact that I’d been completely bowled over by her cuteness and her full curves that first day had been enough to scare me into ignoring her.

  I didn’t do cuteness.

He scoffed. “Then you better get your eyes checked, Brother.”

I decided to change the subject. “Where the hell you been?” Eagle was the enforcer of the club. At six-feet tall he was lean yet muscular and could go lethal in the blink of an eye. He kept his hair short

like the black scruff on his jaw, and he had a full throat tattoo the girls all loved.

He took a breath, the corners of his mouth twisting with disgust. “Mandy.”

One word. That was all. And it was enough to explain everything. Mandy, his ex, had been a viper in the disguise of a sweet school teacher. Eagle was lucky he’d videotaped the destruction she’d done to his house in a drunken rant that had injured her face when glass from a shattered vase had cut her. The charges she’d filed against him in retaliation for breaking up with her had been quickly dropped when Mandy had realized the video would ruin her reputation.

“She still harassing you?” I took a long drag of my smoke and then crushed it out in the dirt next to my chair. I was in the process of trying to quit the nasty habit and was down to five cigarettes a day from a two-pack a day habit.

He nodded. “Yup. Showed up at my house last night, drunk and crying. I had to let her in, she was so fucking loud. Didn’t want trouble with the neighbors again.”

“Big fucking mistake, Brother,” I smirked, thinking about my ex, Teresa. Once I was done I was done. “You know she’s unstable, right?” She was a crazy bitch.

He sighed heavily. “Yup.” There was regret in his tone. “Ended up fucking half the night away, and come morning she was convinced we were back together. Spent an hour trying to get rid of her ass. Finally had to kick her out.”

I shook my head. “You stupid fuck. That was your second mistake,” I snorted. “Never should have fucked her.”

“Don’t I know.” There was deep regret in his tone. “But I loved her once, bro. And she’s a good fuck. She caught me at a weak moment. If it hadn’t been for her drinking, and her lying …” He shrugged.

I’d never asked Eagle what she’d lied about that had ended their relationship. I didn’t delve into the personal lives of my brothers unless it affected the club in some way. “Move on, Brother. Find someone else, and life will be good again.”

Jesus, I sounded like a fucking shrink. I snorted. Eagle moved to get out of his chair. “Where you going?” He wasn’t heading toward the lake.

He gave me the eyebrow wiggle and a suggestive grin. “Next door. Think I’ll invite that pretty

little redhead over here. Maybe I can get a piece of her.”

It was on the tip of my tongue to warn him away from her, but I clenched my jaw and kept quiet. That would only show Eagle that I was interested in her myself. I’d purposely kept away from her, stopped myself from welcoming her to the area, and getting to know her because I was already fucking attracted to her.

  Maybe she wouldn’t come.

  Chapter 3

  Wolfe

  She came.

Christ. I lit another cigarette. I was on my third one of the day, and it was only eleven o’clock in the fucking morning. I’d tried to keep my eyes off her, but when she walked in front of me and blocked my view of the lake, it was damned near impossible. All of a sudden she was standing there, smiling down at me as if we were fucking besties, with all that fucking curly hair surrounding her like a red cloud of softness and the brightest green eyes I’d ever seen. Beautiful, cat-shaped eyes filled with a bright, outgoing light that was surrounded by thick, long lashes.

Since when had I ever noticed a woman’s eyelashes before?

Eagle’s ear-to-ear smile was smug as hell and told me that he thought he’d hit pay dirt. “Hey, Prez, this is Ella.”

“Hi again,” she said in a friendly tone.

Her heart-shaped face was damned pretty with those smattering of freckles across her upturned little nose and cheeks. She had a cupid’s bow mouth that was full and lush and made me want to find out how good my lips fit against them. I wanted a taste. No, fuck that, I wanted to suck on those lips until nightfall.

“Let me get you a beer, sweetheart.” Eagle rushed over to where the cooler sat on the ground next to the grills. He paused to talk to John and Tyler, our two prospects, who oversaw the cooking.

“Thank you for inviting me over.” She seemed a little nervous. “If I’d known, I would have brought a dish.”

“Don’t worry about it.” I kept my eyes hard and my expression harder. It wasn’t easy. I wanted to soak up those fucking curves that were even now teasing my dick into hardness. I reached for the sunglasses on top of my head and slid them down to shield my eyes. That way I could look at the way those full tits stretched out the cropped top she was wearing for as long as I liked. There was a strip of pale flesh showing between the top and her daisy dukes, which were just low enough to reveal the sparkle of her belly button piercing.

Fuck me. I was a sucker for a pierced bellybutton. She didn’t look the type, but then what the hell did I know? I hadn’t bothered to find out what kind of woman she was. I let my gaze continue down her body. Taking my time. Her full curves were exactly what I liked in a woman, and the sudden image of her naked ass in my hands as I squeezed those sweet cheeks caused my dick to jerk.

“Hey, baby, come on in!” Buck called out from the water. He was standing near Lynx, and judging by their expressions, I could just imagine what trash they were talking about her.

“She’s with me!” Eagle yelled back, rejoining us. He handed Ella a beer. “You want to go in for a dip?”

I watched Ella turn her smile on Eagle and fought down the urge to punch him in the mouth.

“Of course!” she said enthusiastically. “I swim every day.”

I knew she did because I’d seen her. She popped the top to her beer, took a sip, and finally, thank fuck, moved out of my direct line of sight.

  “Demo!”

I turned my head just enough to see her scoot over to my dog. The faithless bastard greeted her with a puppy’s enthusiasm for an overgrown, six-year-old Pitbull. I couldn’t believe how comfortable Ella was around him, because he was scary as fuck on a good day. He’d been abused the first two years of his life, hence the stub for a tail and lack of ears. His jaw was crooked from being broken, and there were visible scars around his neck and chest.

  “You going in?”

I returned my attention to Eagle. He’d removed his shirt and was working his pants down his legs. A lot of my brothers went in naked or wearing only their boxers. The sweet tarts would have gone in naked, too, but I didn’t want the hassle of the neighbors complaining of naked chicks in the lake, so I made them wear suits. They were skimpy as fuck, but at least their nipples and pussies were covered.

When Ella was done lovin’ on Demo, she walked back to us and sat her beer down on the ground. “You have the sweetest dog,” she gushed, her comment directed at me.

I responded with a grunt. If she only knew. Demo was dangerous, just like his master. Her pretty mouth pressed tight, and I could tell that she hadn’t liked the lack of a verbal response. If she knew me, then she’d have known that I wasn’t much of a talker anyway. As the president of a motorcycle club, people were surprised to learn I was a quiet man.

Movement drew my gaze back to her. I almost swallowed my tongue when I watched her pull her crop top up and over her head and then set it on the chair Eagle had been sitting in earlier. Her tits filled out the swimsuit top she was wearing. It was emerald green and crocheted. The cups showcased the fullness of her tits and cleavage without being indecent like the ones the sweet tarts were wearing.
