  Where we left off…

Corey was laid up in bed when he got a text from Mari telling him to meet him in the basement in an hour. Realizing that he was in the bed alone, he took that as an opportunity to get washed and dressed before Alyssa came in and began asking him a million and one questions about what he was getting into that day. Although things were going well between them, Alyssa was back to her worrying self since he was back in the streets. Whenever he had to handle business, Corey would check in just to let his wife that he was cool and when he would be home, but that didn’t stop her from hugging him tightly when he came home and holding onto him for dear life when they were sleep. As much as Corey wanted Alyssa to ease up a little, he knew she wouldn’t because she knew as well as he did that every time he walked out the door, he might not return home, but Corey, J.R., Mani and Mari were making sure they returned home to their families every night.

When he finished in the bathroom, he threw on a black Jordan sweat suit and matching Jordan’s. Corey snatched up his keys and phone before walking out the room. As he made his way to the stair case, Alyssa met him at the top of the stairs with their daughter in her arms.

“And where you think you going?”

“I’m about to chill with my bros. We got some business to take care of today,” Corey answered about to head down the stairs.

  Alyssa sighed.

“Look ma, I know how you feel about me being back in the streets, but I’m handling business so we can be straight in the future.”

“There are other ways you can make sure we’re straight, Corey. By getting a real job again.”

Corey sighed running his hand over his face.

“Baby, I don’t mean to stress you out and I don’t want to keep bringing up the past, but that’s something you need to think about. You almost lost everything by being in the streets, and I don’t wanna lose you again bae,” Alyssa fought back tears.

“You’re not gonna lose me bae,” he gripped her chin, kissing her lips softly.

They embraced each other for few moments before releasing each other.

“Before you be gone for most of the day, can you get me a bag of hot Cheetos, a wild cherry Pepsi, and a couple of Slim Jim’s from the store please?”

  “Okay, Lyssa.”

“Thank you baby,” Alyssa kissed his cheek. “I’ll see you when you get back.”

Jogging down the stairs, he went to the basement where he found his brothers smoking a blunt.

“Aye. Wassup y’all?” Corey gave them handshakes before sitting down in the recliner chair.

“We’re about to go run down on this nigga Grant. You rolling with us?” J.R. exhaled the weed smoke.

“Nigga what type of question is that? Of course I’m going.”

“Aight. As soon as we finish this, we’ll bounce,” Mari added.

“By the time y’all finish that, I should be back from the store.”

“The fuck you going to the store for?” J.R. asked.

“Alyssa wants snacks and shit,” he sighed. “Let me go grab her stuff and I’ll be right back.”

“Hurry up man,” Mari called out behind him.

Exiting the house, Corey jumped in his truck, bringing it to life. He pulled out of the driveway and drove down a few blocks down to the nearest gas station. The conversation he had with his wife briefly entered his mind but Corey quickly dismissed it. He couldn’t let Alyssa’s words distract him from what he was about to do that day. Arriving at the store, Corey parked on the side of the lot where the vacuum and air pump was. Before hopping out the car, an uneasy feeling suddenly came over him. Corey checked his surroundings to see if anything seemed out of the ordinary, but nothing stood out to him. Scanning his surrounding once more, he went inside the store, grabbing two of everything that his wife wanted.

After paying for Alyssa’s snacks, Corey jogged back to his car and before he could get in his car, he was caught off guard by a blow to the back of his knees followed by a blow to his back. Dropping everything in his hands as he fell to the ground, he let out an agonizing scream. Corey tried to scramble to his feet but was kicked in stomach and stomped on his back. In between the stomps and kicks, Corey attempted to get up numerous times but to no avail. The pain from being kicked and stomped repeatedly caused him to get weaker by the minute. Stretched out on the ground, his attackers ended their attacks when a car came to a screeching halt beside him. Corey heard his phone ringing in his pocket as his attackers lifted him off the ground, tossing him in the open trunk. He tried to get a good look at his attackers but was unsuccessful when he was knocked unconscious.

D'Mani raced inside of the hospital behind the EMT's and prepared to run his ass right into the back with them too. They were still working on her as a crowd of doctors and nurses came and took over, each yelling out different medical terms to each other that he didn't understand.

“I'm sorry, but you can't go back there.” One of the nurses said, jumping in front him and stopping him from following the stretcher through the double doors. D'Mani looked down at her hands on his chest and then back up at her face with a scowl that made her remove them from his body.

“Bitch I can go where ever the fuck I want to!” her eyes bucked in surprise, and she backed away which was good, because the way he felt, he might have thrown her ass somewhere.

“Baby, calm down.” D'Mani hadn't even realized that Anastasia had already made it to the hospital. She gave him a soothing look and then nodded towards the kids who were standing nearby. “Don't scare them anymore than they already are.” He visibly calmed down somewhat, letting Anastasia slip her arm through his.

“I'll let you know of any updates as soon as possible.” The nurse chimed in, still keeping her distance from him. He nodded and then shrugged off to go and pick up Imani from where she was sitting in one of the stiff plastic chairs the hospital had in the waiting area. She l ooked like she was tired from the events of the day and from not having eaten anything. Kyler sat beside her with his hand in hers like a good big brother, looking just as tired and hungry as she did.

“I'm gonna go grab them something quick to eat from downstairs, you want anything?” D'Mani asked Stasia who was still clinging closely to his side. She shook her head slowly.

“Naw, I'm good, and I called Aunt Shirley to come and get the kids.” She informed him, and if the situation wasn't so serious, he would have laughed. He didn't have anything against their Aunty, but her ass was too wild to be held responsible for some kids.

“Aunt Shirley though?” he asked with raised brows.

“Nigga don't do my Aunty! There's really nobody at the house right now, and she's the only one who can get away at the moment.” She rolled her eyes and said.

D'Mani had forgotten that they were supposed to be riding down on niggas. With everything that was going on, it must have slipped his mind. He told Stasia to give him a second and went to call his brother to let them know what had happened. Of course D'Mari assured him that they could handle things without him, knowing that his place was there at the hospital, but he still didn't like the idea of not being there to have him and JR's backs. He didn't argue about it though and agreed that he would stay where he was to make sure Cheyanne was cool.

It didn't take Shirley long to arrive for the kids with a couple of happy meals in her hands. Of course the kid's weary eyes lit up at the sight, and D'Mani made sure to let Imani know that he would be there to watch out for her mommy and how she was doing. It hurt him to know that he couldn't promise to bring her home, but he didn't want to lie to her. There was a chance that Cheyanne wouldn't make it and he didn't want his baby girl to feel like he had broken a promise. He gave her a kiss on her chubby little cheek and they were gone.

Maybe thirty minutes later, a doctor came out and asked for Cheyanne's family, and D'Mani jumped up, not wasting any time meeting him in the center of the room.

“Well, Cheyanne suffered a severe heart attack. We managed to stabilize her for now, but honestly with her condition, it will be touch and go for a while.” The doctor said with a grim look on his face.

  “Can I see her?”

“She's actually pretty sedated, but she was awake and asking to see a D'Mani?” he flipped through the chart and looked at D'Mani quizzically.

  “That's me.”

“Okay well, you can go ahead back, but I would advise that for now, we keep it at one person at a time.” He put his clipboard under his arm and walked off.

“You go ahead bae.” Stasia told him. “I'll wait right out here.”

D’Mani silently nodded and made his way to the room that they said she was in. When he walked inside, his chest tightened at the sight of Cheyanne hooked up to all types of machines. She looked like she was sleeping with her hands down at her sides as she laid on her back.

“Come on in here.” Her weak voice came out raspy, and he realized that she was watching him as he entered.

“How you feelin’? You know you just scared the shit out of me right?” he joked, hoping to lighten the mood. He pulled a chair up right next to the bed and held her hand in his.

“Where's Imani, did I scare her really bad?” she asked as tears welled up in her eyes. He quickly wiped them away.

“It's okay, she went to the house with Aunt Shirley and she was a little worried, but baby girl knows you're a rider.” He hoped to ease her worry, but from the look on her face, she was thinking the same thing he was when Stasia had told him about Shirley coming.

  “Shirley?”

“That's the same thing I said.” He chuckled. “She's good though, Drea should be at the house, and she came prepared with McDonald's.” They both knew that a chicken nugget happy meal was the magic trick as far as their daughter was concerned. Cheyanne nodded and then she got really quiet before turning back to him.

“I know that I'm supposed to be prepared to die, knowing that its inevitable and all, but today when I felt that pain in my arm, I was scared. I thought that the last time my baby would see me would be today, and I hadn't told her that I loved her or how beautiful she looked."

“It's okay.” He went to cut her off, but she held up a hand to stop him.

“No, it's not. I realize that I can't leave this place without getting some things off of my chest! There's something I need you to know!” she said, raising her voice. The action caused one of her machines to start beeping loudly and D'Mani glanced at it nervously, not sure of what was going on.

“It's cool, Cheyanne. You can tell me whatever it is later if it’s causing you to get this worked up.” He rubbed her hand and tried to get her to relax, but she shook her head as tears streamed down her face.

“I might not be able to tell you later! I need you to know this… it's important!” D'Mani was torn between listening to whatever it was she was trying to say and forcing her to stop because it was obviously getting her too worked up. Figuring that maybe if she just got it out, she would calm down, so he decided to just let her tell him. He motioned for her to go ahead with a short nod.

“It's about Imani. She's not…..” she started and then her body began shaking wildly and her eyes were rolling into the back of her head. D'Mani jumped out of his chair and ran over to the door.

“Aye I need some help in here… hurry up!” as a swarm of doctors ran in and shoved him out of the way. D'Mani felt helpless and despite what was going on, he wondered what about Imani had her so worked up that she had a seizure.

Jessica had slipped up and given the perfect opportunity for the guys to get at Grant. Mari was dressed in a pair of Balmain jeans and a gray hoodie. He felt bad for his twin having to deal with the situation with Cheyanne, but they still had to make a move. The opportunity might not present itself like that again. Even though Mani wanted to still go with them, the guys made him stay at the hospital with Cheyanne. The doctors had pretty much told them that there was nothing that could be done for her sickness, but Mari really hoped that she pulled through. Especially for Imani’s sake. Anastasia had even taken the news hard because of the bond that her and Cheyanne developed within the past few weeks.

Mari called Corey for the fifth time and the nigga still didn’t pick up the phone. He was only supposed to be running to the corner store to grab a few snacks for Alyssa, but he had been gone almost twenty minutes.

“That nigga ain’t made it back yet?” J.R. entered the basement and queried.

“Nah… he must have had to go somewhere else or some shit, but he should have let us know,” Mari stated with agitation.

“Well look… shoot that nigga a text and tell him we out. We can handle that nigga anyway. He gon’ be alone,” J.R. stated.

Mari called Corey one more time, only to get the same results. He said fuck it and did what J.R. suggested and sent a text. Once that was done, the duo slipped out of the door and headed towards their destination. When their anthem came on, Mari and J.R. both rapped along with HOV and got into their zone. As he maneuvered through the streets, Mari noticed that they were a little behind schedule and he silently hoped that it wouldn’t fuck up their plans. Even though they were planning to kill a nigga on a Sunday, they needed everything to go as planned.
