In the early ’60s, the New York City Transit Authority wanted to standardize the underground with Helvetica, but it was expensive to ship type plates from Amsterdam and the NYCTA didn’t have the money. Instead, they used a “placeholder” font called Standard, also known as Akzidenz-Grotesk. The headline typeface used in this book, NYC Sans, is inspired by Standard and was created by Nick Sherman in 2013. He wanted to digitize the letterforms presented in the NYCTA Graphics Standards Manual, which was originally designed by Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda in 1970 and reissued by Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed in 2014. Sherman’s goal was not to precisely re-create the original 1970 typeface, but to capture the same spirit of the original subway signage while creating an evolution, which felt like the perfect fit for Between the Lines.
