Chapter 1
Vallia’s beautiful face was so peaceful, and it was a painful contrast to the turmoil inside me.
She lay unconscious on an emergency gurney in a small curtained-off area of our tent on the outskirts of São Paulo. I could hear all the commotion of my guards, soldiers, and staff working behind us. Somewhere in the jumbled mix of voices, I heard the familiar rasp of Nyxx’s voice as she gave orders.
But all I could focus on was Vallia’s face and her hands that rested on the thin blanket that covered her body.
After the sudden unlocking of memories inside Vallia, a powerful explosion of magical energy had ripped outward from her body, and she’d dropped into unconsciousness right before my eyes. My guards had managed to catch her before she hit the ground, but she’d been unconscious since yesterday.
I sighed deeply and prayed to the goddess that Vallia would wake up.
Firo was confident she’d slipped into some kind of restorative state, and her body and mind were reconciling with the flood of memories returning to her. He’d assured me half a dozen times already that Vallia would likely awake well-rested and as her full self sometime today or tomorrow.
But I didn’t like it.
It was so glaringly obvious to me that Vallia wasn’t just sleeping, and my nervous system screamed that something was horribly wrong.
I’d ordered all our best healers to assess and evaluate her, and not one of them could find anything wrong. So all I could do was wait.
Helena snored softly in the chair beside me, and I pulled my gaze away from Vallia to the easily sleeping form of my harpy wife. I hadn’t spent a single second alone at Vallia’s bedside while Helena, Nyxx, and Gemma took turns sitting with me.
Since the conclusion of the battle in São Paulo, Brazil last night, there had been tons of work for my ladies and staff to take care of. There was a lot for me to do too, but at this point, I was lucky enough to be able to do the majority of my work from right here where I could keep an eye on Vallia.
Helena, Nyxx, and Gemma had taken it upon themselves to fill in where they could and oversee all the work of wrapping up the problems here. They’d taken charge of decisions regarding the transportation of any surviving prisoners, the installation of temporary representatives to fill in after I’d executed Lord Carlos and Lord Riacho, and the process of packing up all the evidence from the camps that had been at war here.
