From there, all it took was one final push for the car to drop down into the water with a deafening splash. We all leaned over and watched as it disappeared into the murk of Lake Michigan like it had never been there at all.
“Bye, SUV,” Monty said. “Good fucking riddance.”
“And now?” Iris asked.
“And now we go the fuck home.”
“I do not think that Monty will fit on the bike,” Yasha announced.
“That’s fine,” he said with a wave of his hand. “I can call an Uber or something. I’ll walk like a mile away or something first then do it.”
I raised my eyebrows as I looked over Monty’s incredibly injured body. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to the hospital?”
He paused, and then his eyes widened. “I forgot I was allowed to do that now.”
I mentally went over the injuries he had sustained in the dungeon, and while the weird puncture marks would be hard to explain, there wasn’t anything overwhelmingly alarming.
“Fuck it,” I said. “Call 911, on me. Treat yourself.”
He burst out into a laugh, but at the same time, he still pulled out his phone from his pocket and began to dial.
He paused and then reached back into his pocket again. “Here. Take the gold and stuff from the dungeon. I don’t want this on me at the hospital. I don’t think I would be able to explain this away, even if I tried.”
I took the bag from him and nodded. “Good plan. Let me know what you find out at the hospital, and after we get home and clean up, we can meet you there?”
“Nah,” Monty waved me off. “Have your night to celebrate. You all probably need time to decompress anyway. I know I want to take a fat-ass nap.”
I snorted. “Sounds like a plan to me. Thank you again for getting us in there.”
“No, no,” Monty said. “Thank you for saving my life.”
I reached out and clapped my hand in his in the quintessential “bro” handshake.
“I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” I told him.
“Hell yeah!” He grinned and then raised his phone up to his ear.
Once he was connected with 911, Iris, Yasha, and I made our way over to my bike, and the crystal that rested just beneath it. I quickly pocketed it, but made sure to keep it in an entirely separate area from the one I had stolen from Harper’s facility.
The three of us pulled on our helmets and situated ourselves on the bike. Monty lowered his phone from his ear and raised his hand in a thumbs up.
Apparently, his ride was on the way, too.
Once I was certain we wouldn’t just be leaving him on the side of the road, I quickly kicked up the kickstand, and then the three of us were off.
The ride back to the apartment passed by quickly, but then again, that might have just been the elation I felt at the fact we’d done it. Not only had we killed Harper, we had managed to take his crystal in the process. It felt like we had achieved the impossible, and in a way, we sort of did.
The three of us stumbled into the apartment with sleep clawing at all of us. I tossed my helmet onto the kitchen island, as well as the two crystals. I took out the bag of gold next and set it down next to the rest of my items from the dungeon.
My body hummed with exhaustion, as well as the lingering memory of adrenaline. I still couldn’t believe we had done it. We had defeated William Harper and gotten away with our lives. He wasn’t going to be able to hurt anyone else anymore.
But that thought brought me back to the conversation we’d had. Harper wasn’t alone in this, and he had hinted at some pretty nasty stuff. It felt like we had just won a battle, but now we knew there was a war.
“I’m going to shower,” Iris announced. “And clean myself up.”
“I think I will join you,” Yasha said. “Wes?”
I looked over at the two women, and I felt a surge of love for each of them swelling in my chest.
“I’ll be there in just a minute,” I said.
They nodded and both disappeared into the bathroom, and the sound of the shower kicked on just a few seconds later.
I scooped up the crystals and the bag of gold to bring them into my room and set them in their usual place on my dresser. I stripped off my leather jacket and tossed it onto my bed then paused. I should probably close my curtains before I gave anyone who was watching a free show.
I made my way over around the bed to close them, but before I pulled them shut, I paused.
A dark sedan was parked at the edge of the street with the engine still running. It was like the driver sensed my eyes on them, though, through the tinted windows, because the engine revved, and the car zipped off before I could catch a license plate number.
A feeling of dread settled into my gut as I watched where the car had once idled, but it was there for a few seconds and then was gone.
There might be more people in the world who were a part of Harper’s crystal empire, and someone might still be watching me, but things had changed now. I wasn’t afraid of what they had to bring, because I knew I could meet them head-on.
I was Wes Rhodes: justice bringer and master of a double-crystal dungeon.
And I was the one they should be afraid of, not the other way around.
They wouldn’t know what the fuck hit them.
