Jack turned back to the room. “So,” he said, “you shouldn’t be sorry for me. I deserve it all.”

  “No, you don’t.”

  “Yes, Jonny. I do.”

They sat in silence for a while, until Jonny said, “What happened in Helm hasn’t ended.”

“It has for me,” Jack groaned.

Jonny ignored him and went on, “Bath have been unable to locate the owner of the burner phone that was calling Robert Samuels. Daniels has been retired with full pension, but there’s no sign of criminal action as Sally Jessopp won’t talk and no one else will come forward.”

  “What about your colonel?”

“He’s gone quiet. Says he was lying. That he knows nothing and now won’t answer my calls. I believe someone has paid him his price to keep quiet.”

Jack grinned a macabre grin. “Always fucking money.”

“Yes. But unless those of us not swayed by greed do something about it, it will always win.”

Jack sighed long and hard, letting out a plume of cigarette smoke as he did.

“I don’t care anymore, Jonny,” he said, staring blankly into the smoky air. “Let the dead seek their own justice.”

And with that he pointed to the door.

“What? That’s it?” the journalist said.

“Yes, Jonny. That’s it. Now get out.”

“But, Jack. The woman you saw at the manor is going to get away with it.”

  “Please, Jonny. Just go.”

“With Will Bainbridge rotting in prison for something he didn’t do?”

  “Please.”

“But it’s like you said. Fucking money. Well, I followed the fucking money, Jack.”

“I’m begging you now,” Jack seethed.

“I followed it all the way to the two people who’ve inherited the lot. Marcus and Harriet Bainbridge. I bet you whoever—”

  “GET OUT!”

Jonny just stared at him so Jack swooped over and grabbed him by the scruff, lifting him from the couch and pushing him towards the door.

“Get out! Get out! Get out!” he repeated as he steered Jonny through the hallway, opened the door and unceremoniously pushed him outside.

Jonny turned around just as the door slammed in his face.

With a deep sigh, he got back in his car and started the engine, gazing one last time at Jack Sheridan’s house, the detective peeking through the curtains at him.

“You’ll be back,” Jonny said to himself as he put the car in gear. “The dead never sleep for men like you, Jack Sheridan.”

  WHAT’D YOU THINK?

Nothing is more annoying than someone asking for a review, but unfortunately, they “matter” or something. As a small publishing house run by a few authors who want to give our readers the best books possible, they matter a lot.

Therefore, if you happened to have a good experience during this read, then we would be exceptionally grateful if you would consider taking a moment to leave behind a quick five-star review. Honestly, it can be super short (or super long, if that's your thing), but even just a star rating without any words can do wonders for a small publishing house like us.

If you were bothered by something, whether it be a typo, mistake, or something else, we'd love to hear about it and will do our best to fix it right away! You can email us at support@righthouse.com.

Without you all, we wouldn't be able to do this. And we'd have to... *shudder*...get real jobs. (No, thank you!)

Therefore, if leaving a review is something you'd be willing to do, that'd be incredible. But even if you don't, we just want you to know how thankful we are that you even gave our work a chance and made it this far. Seriously, you are the best!
