“Then Mexico it is. You’re gonna love this little seashell bikini I picked up today.”

Ransom groaned at the thought of her killer legs on display. “God help me! I love you, baby. So fucking much. I can’t wait to see you.”

“Likewise. Be. Safe,” she reiterated firmly before hanging up.

He put his phone away, but the smile stayed on Ransom’s face. A noise behind him, reminded him that was still in the middle of conducting business. He walked over to the bed and eased the duct tape back from Lorelai’s mouth.

“Sorry about that. Now, where were we?”

“Go to hell, you bastard! I see Rage’s pussy-ass didn’t have the guts to do this himself!” she seethed.

Okay, so he’d told Billy a little white lie.

Ransom had left Chatham two days ago. Minnie had called Rage and shared Lorelai’s temporary assignment in Santa Fe before reporting to D.C. in two months. Since he’d given Shore his word, Rage’s hands were tied. Fortunately, Ransom’s weren’t. He’d entered Lorelai’s apartment when she left for her morning run. She’d returned to find him sitting comfortably in her living room. Lorelai tried to run, but he shot her in both ankles, gagged her, and then handcuffed her to the wrought-iron headboard and bound her feet, uncaring of her injuries.

“Your boss told him to stand down, and he’s kept his word. Regrettably for you, I’m not obligated to Shore in any manner.”

“What happens now?” she panted as tears trickled from the corners of her eyes.

God her ankles felt like they were on fire!

Lorelai despised the vulnerable, precarious position she now found herself in. She was also enraged to be caught slipping after months of scrupulous planning. She’d gotten fucking lax and comfortable with her new position of power and stopped looking over her shoulder. It would now be her downfall.

“Are you going to kill me now or drag it out?”

He didn’t answer, merely deliberated her with flinty unforgiving eyes. That’s when a thoroughly rattled Lorelai lost it.

“Fuck you, Ransom! Fuck that little bitch that’s got you pussywhupped! Fuck your slut of a mother and fuck Rage too!!” she screamed, spittle flying everywhere.

Ransom put the tape back over her mouth and chuckled dryly at the hatred roiling in her eyes.

“Temper, temper. Nah, I’m not going to touch you again. Billy has this thing about me dialing back on the violence since I’m turning over a new leaf. As much as I’d like to, I’ve decided to outsource the job. Don’t worry; I have faith in my associate’s capabilities.”

The closet door slid open, and Charlie stepped out. His eyes were dancing with eagerness, and his agile fingers were already forming a garrote with his fish wire. Lorelai’s eyes doubled in size with fearful recognition and Ransom smiled.

“I see you’ve met Charlie. He doesn’t really get to show off his skillset, so I told him to go extra slow with you today. I want to make sure you get the full experience.”

Ransom winked at the agent, who was struggling unsuccessfully to free herself.

“You crazy kids have fun. Oh, and by the way, Rage sends his regards, Lorelai. Goodbye.”

  “There he is!”

Crow reached over the console and smacked the back of Bones’ head.

“Ow! What the fuck was that for?” his brother complained.

“Keep your voice down, you dipshit!”

The brothers were stationed at the shopping center across from the apartment complex Ransom had entered. They’d trailed him from afar since leaving Chatham. Once, they’d almost lost him. Until Crow noticed he’d parked his bike toward the back of the convenient store next to his destination. They’d almost ambushed Ransom this morning as he made the short walk to the apartment complex until the Mexican biker pulled in and joined him.

Crow frowned as he watched Ransom get on his bike and leave. He quickly started the Bronco. “Stay with him, Bones.”

“He’s in the right lane, heading toward the freeway.”

With no oncoming traffic in sight, Crow was able to cut across the lanes and make a U-turn. He was five cars behind Ransom when the former biker signaled and veered onto the expressway entrance.

“Don’t screw this up, Bones. It’s bad enough you got your ass beat and humiliated by that cocky spook-lover, but you dragged me into it! Because of you I had to come here, kiss ass, and smooth shit over.”

It galled Crow to stand down on the beliefs his father had instilled in his sons. A man had a right to stand up for what he believed in. However, Jackal had made it very clear to Butch, Crow’s prez that he’d better do right and kiss ‘King Ransom’s’ ass. Fuck that shit. In Crow’s eyes, he was a cowardly traitor who’d abandoned their brotherhood.

“Get ready. You only get one shot to redeem our family name so Pops can stop rolling in his grave. Don’t miss.”

Bones slipped the black ski mask over his head and adjusted it around his eyes. He grabbed the Beretta from his backpack between his feet and lowered his window.

  “I won’t.”
