Chapter 1
I looked out over the magic lands as groups of my soldiers patrolled the coastline.
Each squad had been carefully chosen to consist of a range of magical creatures with different abilities. Orcs, griffins, witches, nymphs, and too many more to name watched the sea carefully as they clutched their various weapons. They strode over the emerald hillsides and along the steep cliffs with scowls of determination.
The magic lands had never been more protected than they were under my rule.
I was practically bursting with pride to watch my people come together for the greater good. We had become an army that protected each other despite the vast differences between species and clans.
Life as a tier-one god was still something I was getting used to, but I had never felt so at home before. True, I had never been a guy who believed in the whole destiny thing before, but this was just one of the many details that had changed since I woke up as a god. My life was now full of war, magical beings, and gorgeous priestesses. Everything I had once known about Earth had changed when I found out the planet had evolved into this land of magic.
It had been a hell of a lot to take in.
Now, there were only four gods left in the world, and it was my destiny to destroy two of them.
Having my best friend Tobias by my side had made this whole thing ten times more amazing and doable. He had been there when I built this whole system centuries ago, and he was one of the remaining gods left in this new Earth of magic and enchantment, and I was going to be the almighty ruler who protected it.
There wasn’t a fucking shadow of a doubt in my mind now. Seven evil gods had fallen to my godly weapon so far, and I was so close to finishing the task.
I studied my interface which had a wealth of new information since my last battle. The golden lettering pulsed softly as I looked at my newest reward.
Ability to control the elements of air and water achieved!
Bonus Reward: Speak with enemy gods’ followers in god form
Being able to speak to enemies’ followers was a game changer. I was a pro at converting creatures of all species, and I now had the ability to do it unnoticed by other gods. That meant I could get some inside attacks set up before we went to war.
It felt like the cogs in my head were constantly turning to build the best battle plan. There was no room for error this close to the end. As far as I was concerned, it was my final shot at this. It was my final chance to go through the system I had built and end this bullshit once and for all, and I only had one chance to save the world for good.
Unfortunately, the reward of elements had not been as clear as I had expected it to be.
I had been hoping there’d be some kind of updated instruction manual added to tell me how the fuck I was meant to control air and water. It was apparent that the almighty would have power over all the elements eventually, but I had no idea how to get started. Was I just meant to go into my physical body and wave my hands around like some sort of wizard?
“Hey!” Tobias called as he appeared in human form by the coastline.
My buddy’s red hair glinted under the sunlight as he looked out over the sea, and I focused on my body to join him. I arrived seconds later at his side as the warmth of the sun blazed down on my face. Being able to switch between forms at will was still a rush for me, and I stretched out my arms with a sigh.
“Your people are in high spirits,” Tobias said. “They’re marching around the borders like fucking clockwork. I’ve never seen gnomes and griffins look that focused before.”
“I’m proud of them,” I chuckled. “Everyone seems excited to have the magic lands as my territory. I’m looking forward to exploring it, too. The witches have already finished the golden border wall to the east. I’ve sent hundreds of our fighters out to patrol it.”
“Whoa!” Tobias whistled. “That was some fast work…”
I had set my people to work to build a wall where the God of Vengeance’s land met mine in the east. That stretch of land was our most vulnerable spot, and I had to make sure it wasn’t sitting unguarded.
Two of my priestesses had created thousands of blocks of golden ice, and the witches had spent days flying it out to the border. The magic folks had worked tirelessly as they built the wall up with their spells, and now, I had a massive, magical wall spanning along the entire eastern border that was crawling with my armed fighters.
They were under strict orders to report any signs of movement from the enemy side. If the other gods moved any of their people to try and find the Oracle within my lands, I would know about it.
“My people are ready for action,” I said. “No army is crossing that border without us noticing. The Oracle is going to be ours.”
“Yup,” Tobias said. “We’ve got a serious advantage having that land in our realm. It’s going to make a world of difference when we set off on our Oracle hunt.”
I nodded as I eyed the choppy waves, and a green fin slowly poked out from the surface of the sea.
The Oracle was our ticket to victory. Possessing it was the only way to ensure a second god could stay ruling by the almighty’s side. Otherwise, only a single god could remain. I had to get my hands on it so Tobias could stay my right-hand man. There was no way I was letting my buddy vanish into the abyss after he had helped me through so much of this crazy life.
Besides, it would be way more fun to rule the world with my best friend.
“Do you know much about our last two guys?” I asked. “Are we looking at more famous murderers here?”
“I fucking hope not,” Tobias snorted. “But who can tell anymore? I know the God of Vengeance is known for having the most brutal army imaginable. Beasts that will dismember you in a second, you know?”
“Sounds about right,” I said. “The God of Death doesn’t seem to have much land. I was thinking that could mean he’s allied with Vengeance.”
“He could be,” Tobias said. “That would explain it. There’s no way there’s a tier-one god who only has a tiny bit of territory.”
I studied my map again just to be sure, and I looked at the names displayed in gold over the world. The seas belonged to me, along with half of the planet’s land mass, but the God of Vengeance had almost as much to himself. The God of Death only had an area the size of a forest, but I knew he hadn’t made it this far with only that size of a realm. I figured the system must have just blended the allied gods’ lands together.
“Jack!” Nicola called, and I turned around up to see my priestess riding on the back of a fire dragon.
The red-scaled creatures were not as calm and collected as the ice dragons we had known for so long. Fire dragons were like giant, chaotic puppies that could breathe fire.
I chuckled as the creature spun around in a circle and chased its tail before it finally landed beside me.
Nicola swung a golden leg over the animal and leapt off elegantly. She was one of the priestesses who had been there the first day I had woken up as a god, and she had been by my side ever since. The brunette was a badass beauty with a gift of talking to animals, and she had won over a league of fucking sea monsters in our last battle.
There seemed to be no end to her talent with magical beasts.
“Hey.” I smiled as I pulled the brunette close. “Everything okay?”
“Yes,” Nicola purred as she planted a kiss on my lips. “The others are with the sorcerers, and we thought you might want to come and talk with them.”
“Oh, yeah?” I asked. “Any breakthroughs?”
“They’re talking now.” Nicola nodded. “I think they’re just stubborn and humiliated that they chose the losing god. Understandable.”
The sorcerers had fought against us when we battled the God of Magic and Curses, but I had decided to take them captive rather than kill them. I reckoned they deserved a chance to show their true colors. Some people were forced into these holy battles through fear, and I wanted to give them a shot at turning that shit around. All the witches and wizards of the magic lands had quickly become loyal followers of mine, and I wanted the sorcerers to have the same chance. Besides, they would be a fucking powerful weapon to have in my army. Their magical strength was not something that should be messed with.
“Let’s go,” I said. “Where are they?”
“Near the temple,” Nicola said. “Inside one of the witch’s houses. Do you want to ride Puffy?”
“Puffy?” I asked with a raised eyebrow as Nicola gestured to the dragon.
Its tongue hung out as it watched me intently, and its red tail swished from side to side while it stomped its feet.
“He’s so sweet,” Nicola cooed. “I’ve trained him so well with carrying people around. He’s only almost dropped me twice! Please, Jack. He needs practice.”
“Good going,” I snorted. “Okay, let’s ride… Puffy.”
“I’ll leave that to you two.” Tobias winked. “Meet ya there!”
I sighed as he vanished into god form and left me with the slobbering mess o f a dragon. Puffy eagerly lowered himself for us to climb up onto his back, and I swung a leg over his rough scales. Nicola slid in front of me, and I enjoyed her body leaning against me as our steed slowly rose into the air. I slyly cupped her full breasts in my hands as she giggled delightfully.
“To the sorcerers!” I called as Puffy slowly began to fly.
Nicola pressed her back against me, and it was romantic for a full thirty seconds before our dragon began to go at the speed of a fucking rollercoaster.
“Slow down!” Nicola yelled as she gripped the creature’s neck. “Puffy! I said slow!”
The dragon immediately steadied his pace as he let out a snort of smoke from his wide nostrils. Nicola stroked his neck soothingly, and a tiny fireball escaped from Puffy’s jaw.
“He’s still learning,” the brunette said. “But he’s doing so well!”
“Yeah,” I said as I patted the red scales. “Doing great.”
The view of the magic lands hadn’t gotten old yet, and I loved how bizarre the crooked houses along the hilltops were. Clouds of colored smoke drifted up from various potions being brewed, and excited witches waved at us as we passed by. Cauldrons had been taken outside so the magic folk could work in the sunshine now that nobody was afraid of their god. It was good to see people comfortable in their own homes after living in fear for so long.
Puffy began to lower himself down next to a large house at the bottom of one of the hills. The building had a red door that sat open with a pink cat lazing in the entrance. All the rest of my priestesses were waiting at the front steps, and they leapt to their feet when we finally landed.
I grinned as my women raced toward me while I helped Nicola down off the dragon.
Penelope got to me first, and she threw her arms around my neck as she gazed at me with adoration in her eyes. The blue-skinned naiad had been utterly devoted to me ever since she woke me up on day one of being a god, and she had never once questioned her loyalty. Golden curls tumbled around her beautiful face, and I let my gaze wander down her curves and tiny pregnant belly.
All of my women were pregnant with my children now, and I couldn’t wait to see them all as mothers.
“Jack!” Penelope cried. “It’s so wonderful to see you, my lord!”
“You saw him an hour ago,” Nicola snorted.
“Yes.” Penelope pouted. “That doesn’t make it any less wonderful!”
“I agree,” I chuckled as I stroked the naiad’s cheek.
Aleia the fairy fluttered to my side with her lilac wings sparkling in the sunlight, and she flew close enough to plant a kiss on my cheek. She was an adorable creature with physical strength that had to be seen to be believed. Recently her gifts with alchemy had blossomed, too, and she had become capable of creating precious metals with a touch of her hand. I had watched her confidence bloom since she had arrived that very first day at the convent, and I was endlessly proud of how far she had come.
Celeste smiled at me as she flicked her red hair, and I drank in the view of her ivory legs on display in her short dress. The harpy had joined our group after I saved her from the capture of gargoyles, and I had quickly realized what a force to be reckoned with she was. Her ability to turn into a battle bird had helped us slaughter our enemies, and she was a natural with any weapon handed to her.
My last priestess was Nieva the Dragon Queen. She stroked Puffy’s snout lovingly as the creature licked her face, and her presence seemed to calm him down. We had found Nieva being held captive by the god Ethan when we first became aware of the dragon folk. She was a tough leader with the ability to conjure deadly storms, and her dragons and people loved her fiercely. Her purple curls framed her face perfectly, and iridescent scales made her cheekbones glow beneath her snowstorm eyes.
My women were all as beautiful as they were tough, and I was truly the luckiest guy alive to have them as priestesses.
“The sorcerers are talking,” Celeste said as she gestured to the house. “I think they’re more embarrassed than anything else right now.”
“Yes,” Nieva agreed. “It’s quite clear that they know they chose the wrong god.”
“They just needed time,” Aleia said with a soft flutter of her lilac wings. “I’m sure they will be willing to pledge their loyalty to Jack.”
“Hmm.” Nicola frowned. “We’ll need to keep an eye on them to be sure.”
“Let’s find out how they’re feeling,” I said as Tobias suddenly appeared beside me.
“Okay,” he said as he rubbed his hands. “Time to hear what these creepy fuckers have to say for themselves.”
“Be nice,” I chuckled.
The priestesses led the way back into the house, and I followed after as I carefully stepped over the sleeping pink cat. There was a strong scent of lavender wafting in the air as we walked into the main room of the house. Bright carpets covered the floor in a rainbow of colors, and there were glowing jars and thick books piled on dusty shelves. Green chairs had been pushed to the side of the space to make room for the group of men and women who were tied up on the ground.
Their arms and legs were tied together with a glowing rope that floated around them, and they all scowled heavily at the young witch who watched them like a hawk.
Hazel had been an enthusiastic follower of mine since I first visited the magic lands, and she patrolled around the sorcerers like a prison guard.
“Hey,” I said. “How’s everything going in here?”
“Jack!” Hazel said as she spun around. “Good to see you, my lord! I’ve been making sure they don’t make any sudden moves. I conjured that rope by myself! It’s a new spell I learned.”
The young witch stuck her chest out proudly as she pointed to the floating rope, and I could tell how much my approval meant to her.
“That’s amazing,” I said honestly. “Your powers really are growing every day.”
“Thanks.” Hazel smiled. “Being around the priestesses really inspires me.”
“Understandable,” I said. “They’re pretty fucking awesome.”
I stepped closer to the sorcerers, but none of them met my eyes as they glared at their tied-up limbs. Their dark robes were still stained with filth and blood from the battle, and they all had deep bags under their eyes.
“Good morning,” I said, but nobody replied.
“Have some respect!” Penelope huffed. “The great god Jack is in your presence!”
A couple of the sorcerers glanced up at me, but none of them spoke.
“I’ve given you all a chance here,” I said as I paced up and down slowly. “I know that maybe you didn’t have much choice when you were made to fight for your old god.”
“They did.” Penelope sniffed. “The witches all made the choice to fight for good!”
“Even so,” I said. “I know that sometimes people make decisions based on fear or doubt. This is your chance to make a change. I would love to have you on our team.”
I stopped and looked down at the group, and a couple of them shuffled on the ground.
“We didn’t feel like we had a choice,” one of the men muttered. “He was evil, you know? We had to do what he said.”
“Yes,” a blonde woman said quietly. “Sorcerers aren’t naturally evil or anything. We just want to use our powers to help our god.”
“I understand,” I said. “This is your chance to use those powers for the winning team. My people work together despite their differences, and I know they would welcome you if you joined us.”
“Maybe,” Nicola said as she folded her arms. “We would have to keep an eye on them, though.”
“Agreed,” Celeste said. “They would need to be under watch for a few days.”
I grinned at my priestesses as they looked down at our prisoners with raised eyebrows. They really took their roles seriously, and it was crazy hot when they got passionate.
“Listen,” the oldest-looking guy said. “We’re sorry, okay? Sorcerers aren’t into this whole touchy-feely talk, but we are loyal to the god we choose to serve. Give us a chance to show you what we can do.”
He looked up at me, and his pale blue eyes didn’t flinch as I studied him. There were white hairs sprinkled into his dark beard, and my instinct was to believe him. I checked my devotional map to see that the sorcerers were marked with a pale orange. It wasn’t the red of a true believer, but it was certainly a step up from yellow.
