Because really, that’s all we can do, as parents. We do the best we can with the information and ability we have. I want to think I’m raising children who will know how to stand up for themselves and love others wholly. I hope they’ll know how to pick a partner who meets them at their level and challenges them to be better. I hope their kids will be healthy and whole. I hope they won’t have to deal with shitty bosses or backstabbing coworkers.
But the truth is... life is messy.
I’ve come to realize that I’m not raising the “ideal adult”... I’m raising people who will face challenges just like I do, and they’re going to have to muddle through and learn to heal and come out of it stronger than ever.
If you’re a parent, I hope you know that you’re not alone. It’s okay to be scared and worried and hopeful and happy all at once. If you’re not a parent yet, I hope you enjoyed this glimpse at our life, both in the story and this author’s note. It may not be pretty, but it’s ours.
And if you’re on the outs with your parents, if your parents couldn’t be the people you deserved to have as a child, I hope you know that you deserved better, and that what they couldn’t give you doesn’t define you.
Only you can do that.
