“We told you, man,” Trey says, patting his back. Shayla had some bruises and a sprained wrist, so they released her an hour ago, and she stands behind them with Lana.

  “Can I see her?”

“Yes, however, she’s still out of it from the anesthesia, so it may be a little while until she comes to.”

I nod, my body ready to move and get to her.

“Jackie, please escort Mr. Ford to Mercy Daniels’s room.”

The nurse he speaks to behind the desk nods. As she leads me that way, I follow on her heels, looking in every room we pass for my girl.

“Right here, sir. Let us know if you need anything.”

I don’t respond. When I stop and look down at Mercy, her head is bandaged and so is her neck. The wires coming from all over make this even more devastating. My girl is here and broken, because I couldn’t keep her safe. I broke a promise.

Pulling up a chair, I park myself next to her bed and hold her hand. Kissing it over and over again, taking in her scent, I wait every second for those beautiful blue eyes to penetrate mine. Somewhere along me waiting for her to wake up, I joined her in slumber and fell asleep. Because next thing I know, I hear an angel calling out to me in my dream.

“Kellan? Baby, wake up. I need water.”

I open my eyes and peer up at her. Coming out of my sleep or what feels like a dream, it takes me a minute to register.

  “Kellan, water?”

Suddenly, I become alert and I’m on my feet, moving to the other side of her to get her water off the counter. Grabbing it, I bring the straw to her lips and she takes a few sips.

“Thank you. I couldn’t feel my throat it was so dry.”

I put down her cup and come back to her side, taking her hand in mine and bringing it to my lips. “Mercy. I’m so sorry I wasn’t there.” I ask her to forgive me, and she shakes her head as much as she can with the restrictions.

“No, Kellan, you saved me. If you hadn’t gotten there when you did, I would be gone. And Shayla… Oh God, is she okay?” Mercy tries to sit up, and by the look on her face, it causes pain to erupt from where they operated on her.

“Yes, she’s fine. She’s okay. Now sit back. Don’t overdo yourself.” I ease her back on the bed, and she gives up the fight, too weak to do the opposite.

  “Thank God. Is he…?”

I nod, not making her finish the question, and she starts to cry—a cry of relief, and a slight bit of disbelief lingers.

“He’s gone, Mercy. He can no longer hurt you or anyone you love. He’s gone,” I declare, and she nods, her lip and chin trembling.

“Thank you for coming and not listening to me. If you would have listened to me, Shayla and I wouldn’t be here.”

I smirk. “Yeah, so when are you going to learn I know what’s best?” I try to make light of everything going on.

“Never. Because I know what’s best.” She gives it back.

“True. I’m the best you ever had, so you got that right.”

Rolling her eyes as I kiss the back of her knuckles, she brushes that comment off. “Am I okay?”

“Yeah. You are. They said you’ll make a full recovery. You have a concussion and had some internal bleeding, but they stopped it in the OR. So with rest and time, they said no long-term damage will be done. Which means you will have to rest, Mercy.” I give her that stern, I-ain’t-messing-around look.

“Oh, I can do that. I like the idea of bossing you around and making you tend to me.”

I scoff, but that smile fades and I get on my knees, putting my head against her hip. She places her hand on my head and rubs my hair.

  “Kellan, I’m okay.”

I shake my head, the emotions coming back. I peer up at her and shake my head once more. “Mercy, you don’t get it. I can’t fucking lose you, baby.”

“And you won’t. He’s gone and nothing will ever hurt me again. I won’t run.”

I nod, grabbing her hand again and lightly kissing her fingertips.

“No you won’t. Damn it, how do you always have me so weak for you and on my knees?” I ask, coming to stand again.

She grins. “I guess my name precedes me. Isn’t that what mercy does?” She winks, and I lean in close, our lips but an inch apart.

“Yes it is. Have mercy on me, baby.”

With that, we share a kiss. Finally, she’s in my hands again, and I will never have to watch her slip away from me.

  Epilogue

  Kellan

“Mercy! Fuck, baby!” I come at her will, my beautiful wife on top of me taking everything from me.

“Yes! Ohh!” she moans, riding out her orgasm, that damn silk wedding dress bunched at her waist while our guests mingle downstairs.

“Shit. We told everyone we were going to change. Now everyone will know you’re no longer a pure woman,” I tell her matter-of-factly, her chest falling to mine as I rub circles on her soft skin.

“Well, they were going to find out soon enough, especially when they realize we didn’t have a honeymoon baby, but a pre-wedding baby.”

My eyes widen and I sit her up, my hands on her biceps. “You’re pregnant?” We have been trying for six months now, and after the accident, it seemed that she may have a harder time. But turns out, fate had other plans.

  She nods, biting her lip.

“Yes! Mercy!” I sit up and kiss her everywhere my mouth can reach—her neck, her collarbone, her beautiful chest.

“I can’t wait to grow our family,” she whispers, kissing me back, grabbing my face and leaving open-mouthed ones anywhere she can.

“You just made me a father. You get that?”

She nods, our eyes finding one another. “You’re making me a mother.” She smiles. “You’re giving me a family,” she whispers.

Mercy’s parents aren’t in the picture still, and I can one hundred percent say it is not her loss but theirs. She has me and my family now. They love her, treat her like she is theirs. My mother and she bonded instantly, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I had to caveman carry her out of the house, because they wouldn’t stop gabbing when I wanted to take her home.

We have each other, and nothing comes between us anymore. No secrets. No regrets. No more running. The only thing between us is our growing child and that’s the best thing to have. We fought hell to get back to one another, and it was worth everything to get back here. I no longer have to call to Mercy in my dreams and see her in every memory. No, I get to have her forever.

I have my Mercy, and she has me.

  “I love you, Mercy Ford.”

“And we love you, handsome man,” she proclaims with her hand over her belly.

  Mine.

  Boom.
