The Library of Madness and Evil, page 6
"Don't answer them," Alex warned. "Just keep going."
Each step was more difficult than the last. The ground opened into cracks that seemed to try to swallow them whole, and from these cracks emerged fleshy tentacles that coiled around their feet. Adrián struggled to free himself, while Sara helped him. Helena illuminated the path, but even her flashlight seemed insufficient to dispel the fog.
"This is hell!" Adrian shouted through gritted teeth. "A fucking hell!"of flesh and blood!
Alex took a deep breath.
—I know, but we can't stop. The center of the labyrinth is near. We mustDestroy the source of the Threshold before the shadow devours us all.
A hand emerged from the fog, covered in flesh and scars, and grabbed Helena by the arm. Her scream echoed through the labyrinth, and Alex and Sara rushed to her, holding Adrian behind them so he wouldn't be dragged down. With effort, they managed to free her, but eachEvery second that passed was a challenge against the will of the Library.
"Faster!" Alex shouted. "We can't let them separate us."
The Broken Path narrowed, becoming a corridor with walls of pulsating flesh, veins throbbing around it. Every breath was a challenge; every step made the ground tremble, as if the labyrinth itself wanted to swallow them whole.
Sara put her hands to her mouth, nauseous.
—I can't... I can't look at this...
Alex theheld.
—Don't look. Just keep going. Focus on us, not on what they're trying to show you.
Suddenly, the flesh of the walls opened, revealing fragments of their worst memories: Alex saw his dead brother pleading for help, Sara saw her most painful betrayal amplified, Helena saw her parents dismembered by the fog, and Adrian saw monsters made of his own guilt attacking him.
"No!" they shouted in unison, and the relic in Alex's hands began to glow.weakly, reminding them that there was still hope.
"Together!" Alex shouted. "This is a test. We can't give in."
The four of them held hands, forming a human circle within the narrow corridor. The light from the relic expanded, illuminating the pulsating flesh and causing them toThe tentacles retreated. The shadow let out a roar that echoed throughout the labyrinth, mixing human voices with animal cries.
"Feel our fear..." whispered the shadowy voice in their minds. "Without fear, there is no power."
Sara screamed, concentrating all her strength:
—NO! We're not afraid of you!
Helena and Adrian replied in unison, while Alex held the relic in front:
—Together! We are stronger!
The relic's light sliced through the fog like a knife. Tentacles tore, and the memories of her worst fears slowly faded. The throbbing fleshIt began to shrink, as if the labyrinth itself were dying.
"Keep going!" Alex shouted, urging them on. "The center is close."
Finally, they reached an open space in the heart of the labyrinth. A black sphere, larger than the previous one, floated in the air. From it emanated red mist and tentacles that moved with a life of their own. It was the source of the Threshold, and the shadow wasinside it, watching them with coal-black eyes.
"There's no going back," Alex said, breathing heavily. "We must destroy her."Now, or it will all have been in vain.
Sara, Helena, and Adrián stood beside it. The relic vibrated intensely, and the red light grew, illuminating the entire labyrinth. The shadow roared, hurling fragments offlesh and tentacles that hit the walls and the floor.
"Through the Broken Path!" Alex shouted, and everyone focused their strength on the relic.
The light exploded, piercing the black sphere. Tentacles tore, the red mistIt dissipated, and a final scream from the shadow echoed in their minds. The sphere collapsed, leaving only ashes and pools of black ink on the ground.
They breathed, exhausted, covered in sweat and dirt. The Broken Path ahead was clearer. The Library had quieted down, but Alex knew it wasn't the end: the shadow was still there, lurking, learning, waiting.
"For now... we've made it," Alex said, looking at his friends. "But we must keep going. This isn't over."
Sara hugged him.
—Together. Always.
Helena nodded, wiping away her tears.
—But I feel like something is following us... even outside of this labyrinth.
Adrian looked at the extinguished relic and sighed.
—This is just the beginning.
The Broken Path stretched before them, and the Library, behind them, watched.silent, alive, and eager.
CHAPTER 14 — Eyes in the Darkness
The air outside the Flesh Maze was heavier than anything they had experienced so far. The fog, though more dispersed, still swirled like a river of dark smoke, with red flashes that flickered like contained flames. Each inhalation brought a metallic smell, a mixture of blood, rust, and rotten dampness that burned their throats.
Alex led the group, the dormant relic hanging from his neck. His face was pale, streaked with sweat and dirt, but his eyes held a clear resolve. He knew the shadow hadn't vanished; it had only been contained, and now it would be smarter, more patient, more ruthless.
"Stay together," he said, his voice firm but filled with anxiety. "Every second we're apart makes us weaker."
Sara walked beside him, clinging to his arm, breathing heavily.
"How do you know we can withstand another test?" she whispered. "Every time we think we're done, something worse is waiting for us."
Alex theHe looked.
—Because we have no other choice. If we don't continue, the shadow will find us where
wherever we are. And this time... there will be no warning.
Helena and Adrian trailed behind. Helena shone her flashlight, revealing twisted human figures in the fog, distorted faces staring at them with empty eyes. Adrian held a piece of wood as an improvised weapon, but every movement was a challenge against the shifting gravity of the Broken Path.
"This never ends," Adrian murmured. "It's as if the world itself is alive and wants to devour us."
The Broken Path led them into a forest that seemed older and darker than any they had ever seen. Enormous trees with blackened bark twisted at impossible angles, their roots emerging from the ground, forming corridors that forced them to zigzag. The fog, now almost solid, prevented them from seeing more than a few meters ahead.
Suddenly, a wet, creaking sound surrounded them. Something was moving through the fog. Deformed human figures, covered in dried blood and open wounds that oozed a black liquid, emerged from the ground and the roots. Their eyes glowed with fire.lifeless, and their open mouths emitted silent screams that pierced the mind.
"Don't look at them!" Alex shouted, pushing everyone forward. "Just keep moving."
Sara felt something brush against her leg. She looked down and saw a thin tentacle covered in skin torn from some corpse, trying to grab her. She screamed, and Alex swatted it away with a swift movement of the relic, which emitted a faint red glow.
"Every time we use the relic," Alex said, breathing heavily, "we get closer to its center. It's making us use it to strengthen itself."
Helena looked up and saw thousands of eyes shining among the branches and the mist.Eyes followed them, evaluating, judging, waiting.
"They're not just bodies," he said. "They're sentinels. They're watching over us."
Adrian tried to move forward, but was stopped by a root that emerged from the ground as ifout was a living arm.
"Help me!" he shouted, as Sara freed him.
"Quick!" Alex shouted. "The maze changes. Every second here is dangerous."
Suddenly, a familiar scream echoed through the trees. It was Alex's dead brother, orAt least the vision the shadow had used before. Its eyes were empty, and its open mouth exhaled red mist that mingled with the Broken Path.
"Alex!" Sara shouted, pulling him along. "It's not him. It's the shadow. Don't answer it."
But Alex stopped, frozen, as the vision moved toward him.
"Alex!" Helena shouted, grabbing his shoulders. "Don't listen to him!"
The vision rushed toward him, and suddenly, the ground beneath his feet opened, lettingThey saw an abyss filled with tentacles and eyes watching them from below. Alex fell backward, but Sara held him tightly.
"Together!" Alex shouted. "We can't be apart."
They held hands, forming a human circle. The relic began to vibrate, and a faint red glow cut through the mist. Tentacles tried to grab them, but recoiled at the light. The vision of the dead brother shrieked, writhing, beforevanish into the fog.
Adrian took a deep breath.
—This... this is worse than everything that came before.
Alex looked at his friends, his gaze fixed and determined.
—Yes. But we're together. This is the only thing keeping us alive.
Suddenly, the fog thickened and the ground became sticky, as if it werecovered in blood and flesh. Every step they took sank them a few centimeters deeper, forcing them to fight against the terrain that seemed alive.
"I can't take it anymore!" Sara cried, trembling. "This isn't real."
"Yes, it is," Alex said. "But we can resist it. Let's focus on ourselves, on our strength, not on what wants to destroy us."
The Broken Path eventually led them to a clearing where a structure of bone and flesh stood before them. It was a giant altar, covered in tentacles and eyes that
They followed his every move. The shadow was there, mingling with thestructure, observing them with malignant intelligence.
"There's the source," Alex said, swallowing hard. "If we destroy that, we can..."to end this nightmare.
Sara, Helena, and Adrián accompanied him, each holding the relic, concentrating all their energy on a single objective: to face the shadow and survive.
The light from the relic grew, expanding until it touched the structure. The shadow roared, hurling fragments of flesh and tentacles at them. Each blow was a physical and mental challenge. Their worst fears materialized before them: mutilated bodies, painful memories, past guilt.
"Together!" Alex shouted. "Nobody breaks us!"
The light intensified, slicing through the tentacles and disintegrating the flesh that formed thealtar. The shadow shrieked, blending all human and animal voices into a heart-rending scream. Finally, with a last burst of red light, the structure collapsed, leaving only ashes and pools of black ink.
The four collapsed to the ground, exhausted, covered in sweat and dirt. The Broken Path was clearer now, though the shadow's presence could still be felt, lurking, waiting.
"We did it... for now," Alex said, looking at his friends. "But this... this isn't quite right yet."
It ends.
Sara hugged him, with tears in her eyes.
—Always together.
Helena sighed.
—But I feel like something is following us... even off the Path.
Adrian looked at the extinguished relic and murmured:
—This is just the beginning.
The abyss stretched before them, the Broken Path still lived, and the shadow...
Silently, she watched them.
CHAPTER 15 — The Ritual of the Eyes
The Broken Path before them opened into a clearing wider than any they had ever seen. The ground was covered with roots that resembled giant veins and dark pools that reflected the moonlight, even though night was nonexistent within this distorted reality. Each reflection was a warped version of themselves: Alex with empty eyes, Sara covered in open scars, Helena mutilated, Adrian transformed into a shadow monster.
"This... this is too much," Sara whispered, trembling. "How do we go on?" Alex took a deep breath, the deactivated relic hanging around his neck.
—We have no choice. Every step we take brings us closer to the center of the shadow. There we can end this.
Helena shone her flashlight along the path, but the light seemed to be absorbed by the red mist swirling among the roots. Suddenly, the puddles churned, and hundreds of eyes emerged from the dark water, following them, blinking, their pupils wide like blades.
"My God!" Adrian shouted. "That's impossible!" Alex held Sara's hand.
—Yes, it's possible. This is the Library... and the shadow is playing with us.
He wants to break us mentally before attacking us physically.
The eyes began to open in sync, forming complete human faces that emerged from the puddles. The faces emitted silent screams and stared directly at each person, revealing their worst guilt and memories.
Sara closed her eyes, trying to block them out, but the memories seeped into her mind: the betrayal of a friend, secrets she had hidden all her life, moments of fear and despair.
"Focus!" Alex shouted. "Don't let them manipulate you. We're stronger together."
The Broken Path led them to an altar in the center of the clearing, constructed from human bones, flesh, and tentacles that throbbed like a giant heart. Above the altar, a black sphere slowly rotated, emitting tentacles of red mist and dripping a thick liquid that smelled of iron. The shadow was inside it, mingled with the flesh and bones, watching them with eyes that seemed to absorb the light.
Helena swallowed.
—That... that's what fuels all of this. The source of the shadow.
Adrian raised his improvised weapon.
—If this is what's behind it all... we have to destroy it.
Alex held the relic with both hands.
—It won't be easy. This isn't just physical. They'll try to break us from within, attacking...our mind.
As they approached the altar, the sphere's eyes began to open, and tentacles emerged from within, reaching out toward them. Each tentacle carried fragments of their worst memories: Alex saw his dead brother pleading for help, Sara saw her most painful betrayal amplified, Helena saw her parents dismembered, and Adrian saw all his guilt transformed into monsters that attacked him.
"No!" they shouted in unison, and the relic began to vibrate, emitting an intense red light.
"Together!" Alex shouted. "Don't let them break us."
The four joined hands, focusing their strength on the relic. The light expanded, illuminating the sphere and severing the tentacles that tried to ensnare them. The shadow screamed, a sound that blended thousands of human and animal voices.
"No! You cannot defeat me!" the voice echoed in their minds. "Every fear you feel only strengthens me."
Sara screamed, concentrating all her strength:
—We're not afraid of you!
Helena and Adrian replied in unison, while Alex held the relic in front:
—We are stronger together!
The light from the relic intensified, slicing through the tentacles and disintegrating the flesh thatIt formed the altar. The shadow shrieked, blending all human and animal voices into a heart-rending scream. Finally, with a last burst of red light, the sphere collapsed, leaving only ashes and pools of black liquid on the ground.
The four collapsed to the ground, exhausted, covered in sweat and dirt. The Broken PathWhat was in front of them was clearer, although they could still feel the presence of the shadow, latent, waiting.
A creaking sound behind them made them turn around. In the red mist, new shapes began to form: eyes, hands, faces slowly emerging. The Library was far fromto be defeated.
Alex gritted his teeth.
—We must keep going. Every step we take brings us closer to the truth... and to the end.
Sara nodded, clinging to his arm.
—Together. Until the end.
Helena illuminated the Broken Path, and Adrian moved forward, pushing aside any root or tentacle that tried to stop them. Every step was a challenge, every breath a reminderthat the shadow was alive, learning, adapting.
Night was falling around them, but they pressed on, determined to face whatever came. For though the Library and the shadow were immense, their strength lay in something that not even the darkness could touch: the bond between the four of them.
CHAPTER 16 — The Heart of the Library
The Broken Path finally led them to a different place: a vast, dark, and damp underground chamber, where the echoes of their footsteps reverberated like the beating of a gigantic heart. The temperature dropped drastically, and a fetid, metallic smell filled the air, making their stomachs churn.
Alex stepped forward first, holding the extinguished relic, while Sara walked beside him, Helena to his right and Adrián to his left. Each of them was breathing heavily. The tension from the previous confrontation was still fresh in their muscles and minds.
"This... this feels like the heart of everything," Helena whispered, watching the walls slowly throb, as if they were made of living flesh.
Adrian murmured:
—And I bet that inside this heart, the shadow is stronger than ever.
Alex nodded, frowning:
—We can't waste any time. We must get to the center and destroy it once and for all.
As they advanced, the ground began to move beneath their feet. It was like walking on a living organism: each step caused contractions that made them lose their balance, and fleshy tentacles emerged from the cracks to grab them.
Sara screamed, trying to dodge one that grazed her:
—No! He's going to catch us!
Alex grabbed his arm, pulling hard:
—Stay strong! We can't separate!
Helena shone her flashlight, revealing walls covered with thousands of eyes staring at them. Each eye blinked in unison, and the feeling of being watched enveloped them like a blanket of pure anxiety.
"This is too much," Adrian said, his voice trembling. "I feel like everything that
We have lived through... it's nothing compared to this.
