Bite, page 64
I keep my hard gaze on her, as I mutter, “No, you have my word.”
“Good,” she cheerfully exclaims. She then faces Gina and says, “Well, a deal is a deal. You are free to go.”
“And Sam? What will happen to him,” Gina asks.
“Exactly what was supposed to happen the last time I saw him but I think this time I might change the rules a bit. He will do my bidding and if I’m happy with what I see then maybe I’ll let him live. It all depends on how good he is and how much you suffer.”
Harry and Joseph look directly at me while Gina stands in shock. I just scowl as I glare at Ursela. So she wants to play with my wife’s mind and give her false hope? She knows damn well that when I’m finished being her little lap dog, her dagger will make its way right into my heart and poof, I’m gone. As much as I want to do my best and try to yank her head off her shoulders, I keep my voice even as I ask, “Will my queen allow me a moment to say goodbye to my wife?”
Always in her playful mood, she giggles like a schoolgirl as she replies, “But of course. I am a sucker for true love Samuel.”
Ignoring her comment, I look helplessly at my wife as Gina walks closer to me. I see her fighting very hard not to let her tears fall so Ursela won’t discover her hidden talent. I stare angrily at Ursela who releases me from her hold so I can hold Gina for what might possibly be the final time. I want to savor every ounce of this moment.
“Sam, why didn’t you stay where you were hiding or better yet, why didn’t you stay with your brother,” Gina somberly asks.
“Because I wasn’t going to just stand back and watch you take my fate.” She’s fighting even harder not to let the tears fall and I know we don’t have much time before Ursela will yank me away. I take her face into my hands and I mentally say, you know what you have to do love. You work hard to get inside that bitch’s head and don’t give up no matter how hard it gets for you. I know you will come and save me. I’ll be waiting for you love.
Even if it means giving up my immortal life, I won’t give up on you baby.
I love you Gina. And as I kiss her, I feel Ursela beginning to move me away from her. But that isn’t all I feel. I start to feel a strong burning in my throat and the desire I feel for Gina is slowly ebbing away. I know the venom is beginning to take over so I look at Gina so I can quickly say, “Take care of my heart love!”
“Only if you will take care of mine!”
I give her a huge smile before I feel the venom send a surge of pain throughout my body. It reminds me of when Ursela first bit me and how her venom was traveling through my body and leaving me in total agony. I hear Gina calling my name but it sounds like we’re on opposite sides of a tunnel and her voice is fading away. The pain is overwhelming and I try to fight as hard as I can but I know it’s useless since it is only going to beat me. The voices around me start to become clearer and I hear Gina screaming at Harry, “Let me go! I have to go to him! She’s killing him!”
“Keep her back,” I shriek out. “I don’t want to hurt her.”
I feel them both halt as I straighten up my stance. The pain has finally subsided and I raise my head up and open my eyes. Gina begins to shake her head, as she mumbles, “No Oh God Sam no!”
I just stare at her and strangely, though her face seems familiar, I can’t place who she is. I look over at Ursela who is smiling as she says, “Time to go Sam.”
We turn to leave but I stare at the young vampire’s face one more time. I want to remember her beautiful face even though something is nagging at me that I know her. She stares right into my eyes and we stay locked in a gaze for a few moments. She mouths I love you and I just turn to follow Ursela.
We run until we reach the New York/Vermont border by nightfall. Most of us in the group are growing thirsty so Ursela leads us to a small town. She looks around with a victorious smile as she says, “Enjoy the buffet my children. This is only the beginning. We will no longer be second to these worthless humans. It is time for the vampires to show them who the superior species is. Go and show these humans the only reason they were put on this earth for.”
I look ahead and I see a man sitting in his backyard while smoking a cigarette. Ugh, I hate the smell of those damn things but blood is blood. I creep over to him and catch him by surprise as he puts the cigarette out. I grab him by the neck and viciously rip his throat apart as I drink his blood hard. After I finish him off, I easily go inside the house since with Ursela’s venom I don’t require an invitation to get inside and I find his wife who is cleaning up the kitchen and she’s drained after five minutes. The blood flows through my veins but it didn’t satisfy me enough. I go outside and look around at the other houses where Ursela’s other vampires are feeding and I just smirk.
Suppertime.
The Return of the Vamp with the Sexy Bedhead
(Gina)
I take my time going back to the house because the events of what just happened play over and over in my head. What sticks with me more was the way Sam looked at me before he left with Ursela. He stared at me as if I was a total stranger even though his eyes almost recognized me. I was so close to saving him and Sam gave himself up so I would be safe. I just couldn’t bring myself to understand or accept his reasons behind why he did what he did. Harry and Joseph walk ahead of me so I can be alone with my thoughts as I try to think of what I’m going to say to the rest of the group when we got home. How am I going to tell Charlie that his brother has been taken by Ursela? That is if he didn’t know already. And most importantly will he blame me and hate me forever especially if Sam ends up getting killed? Then again will I be able to forgive myself for not fighting harder for my husband?
I have to stop beating myself up and focus on the situation at hand. The fact is Sam is gone but he is counting on me to get him back and I can’t help him if I start feeling sorry for myself. And I have to start coming up with some kind of plan to rescue him even though I have no idea how in the world I’m going to do that. I tried to look in her mind one more time before she took my husband away but all I saw was blackness and more blocks than I could count. I was careful not to do anything unusual so I don’t think she suspected my gift but I knew that if I am the one to defeat her, I had my work cut out for me.
We still have quite a while to go before we’re home so I am using this time to try to come up with ideas on how I am going to live up to Vincent’s prophecy (okay I’m getting a little carried away) and kill that bitch once and for all. I’m so deep in thought that I didn’t realize that Harry and Joseph stopped walking until I nearly bump into them. I look at them apologetically as I ask, “Hey what happened? Why did you stop?”
They’re staring straight ahead and when I look in the same direction, I can’t believe what my eyes are seeing. Standing before us is someone who is supposed to be dead but here he is glaring right back at us as if nothing ever happened.
Rob, the vampire that attacked Steve and I in the computer lab, is standing in front of us with a wicked grin on his face.
“How…how can this be possible?” Joseph asks dumbfounded. He runs a hand through his hair as he mumbles, “It’s unfeasible!”
“Hmmm, nothing is impossible when you are invincible. Being bitten once is fine but twice and you truly live forever,” Rob leers at us.
Harry’s fangs grow out as he growls, “Well I promise you that we’ll make sure that you stay dead this time.”
While they are talking, I quickly peer inside his head to figure out how this could be possible. I know Charlie burned him up but here he stands looking exactly the way he did when I saw him that day in the lab. After searching, I find what I’m looking for and I can’t believe what I’m seeing.
I’m looking at a memory of when Ursela first wakes up. Carla explains to her what happened to the vampires that she sent out to try to kidnap me before I was turned into a vampire. Ursela is initially upset but she said, “No matter. Since I bit them it will be easy to bring them back so they can have the pleasure of killing Gina themselves. I’m sure they will want their revenge.”
“But how? Charlie burns them up so their bodies are nothing but ashes that has long scattered by now.”
Ursela appeared annoyed that she has to explain herself to Carla but she holds her composure as she replied, “They have my venom remember? Any vampire with my venom cannot be killed unless it is by me.”
Carla smiled but then her face grew somber as she asked, “My queen, can you bless me as well?”
Ursela turned up her nose as she began to chant a powerful spell. After a few moments, a flash of light filled the area where they were and when the light faded, standing there were Rob, Jack and the blond vampire that I fought with on my wedding night. The three of them bow at Ursela while she responded, “Carla when you prove that you are worthy of my gift, maybe I’ll consider it. I mean, you’ve done well so far but Gina still lives and is now a vampire with some of my venom. And if what Vincent told you is true then she is a very dangerous threat to me. In fact, without my magic, we are practically equals!”
I jump out of Rob’s head just as he makes a jump for Harry. I mentally pull him down to the ground and hold him still while I tower over him. “I know what happened and how he came back. And I might know how to bring Ursela down,” I say coolly. I then look at Rob sternly as I say, “Unless you want to die, I suggest you calm down.”
He looks into my eyes and I open them wider so he can see the color of mine. Once he does, he appears to be a little afraid as he quietly asks, “What would you have me do?”
Astonishment spreads on Harry’s face as he asks, “What the hell…”
“More like what the fuck is going on here,” Joseph cuts in.
I smile as I say, “He thinks I’m Ursela.” They both are still confused so I continue, “The venom connects them to her so I saw in his head how Rob here came back. Her black magic is in the venom so normal vampires cannot kill them. But since I have her venom…”
“You are like her and he as to take orders from you,” Joseph finishes.
“Well not exactly. His mind is enslaved so it’s not truly focusing right. He just sees my green eyes and smells her venom. To him, I’m like Ursela’s right hand girl.”
The three of us look down on Rob as he remains perfectly still. Harry exhales as he says, “Well go ahead and ask him where is Ursela taking Sam and if she’s planning on adding any more vampires to her army.”
I kneel down so I can be closer to him. He just gazes at me as I ask, “Do you remember me? Think about it for a moment.”
His eyes dance around while he tries to recall that day in the computer lab and when he remembers, he replies, “You stabbed me with a letter opener.”
“Yes I did and my brother-n-law burned you up yet you’re still alive.”
“Disappointed,” he asks and that velvet voice I heard him use that day comes out.
I grin as I respond, “Actually relieved. Thanks to you I’m starting to get ideas on how to kill her.” My fangs grow longer as I continue, “But now it’s time for you to finally rest in peace Rob.”
I keep my mental hold on him as I sink my fangs into his neck. However, I wasn’t expecting the reaction that happens once I do. It feels like a jolt of electricity that passes through my body and the current is so strong that I am literally tossed off his body. When I look back at him, his body is twisting up in pain as he lets out a loud roar. Harry rushes over to me as he asks, “Are you alright?”
I nod while murmuring, “Yeah I’m fine.”
“What’s happening?”
I slowly shake my head as I get on my feet while I respond, “I’m not sure.”
Rob is in agony for a few minutes and then suddenly his body is still. We are all scared to move but I gradually walk over to him while carefully watching him. The second I’m standing next to him, his eyes fly open and he’s immediately on his feet and backs away with his fangs exposed. Joseph and Harry are equally prepared but my mouth hangs open as I stutter, “L-look at h-his eyes.”
They both follow my orders and I keep my watch on him as Joseph says, “Holy shit! Gina, what the hell happened?”
Rob is glaring at us with bright crimson red eyes waiting for one of us to make a move for him. I hold up my hands as I begin to slowly walk back towards him. He is still in defensive mode but he doesn’t react when he sees that I mean him no harm. “Rob, do you remember me?”
“Should I,” he growls.
Okay that was rude. I take a deep breath as I ask, “What is the last thing you do remember?”
That actually makes him think for a moment and I watch as his eyes turn gold while his fangs retreat into hiding. He relaxes as he replies, “The last thing I remember, I was out on a normal hunting trip with another vampire named Jack and we met a redhead. That’s all I can remember.”
“So you don’t recall a blond vampire that the redhead might have introduced you to?”
His eyes brighten as he says, “Yes.”
I turn to face Harry and Joseph whose faces are unreadable. I’m gathering an idea of what happened but I need to be one hundred percent sure. “We have to get him to Charlie so he can help me put this together.”
Harry shakes his head as he says, “I don’t think that will be a good idea.”
“I agree. I’m still trying to get over the last time we saw him,” Joseph adds.
Rob appears confused so I quickly summarize out first encounter for him. When I get to the part of how we thought we killed him and Jack, he winces but asks, “But if that’s what happened then how am I here right now?”
Charlie approaches us (damn he is sneaky) and says, “I can answer that. Carla was a naughty girl and tried to wake Ursela up early but of course we know she wakes on her own accord. But Carla could have brought a number of vampires for her and Ursela is never one to pass up a chance to create her slaves so she bit them. But since she wasn’t ready to get up, she left them in Carla’s hands until she was ready.”
“How do you know this,” I ask.
He just smirks as he replies, “It’s all in his head. All you had to do was just take a peek my dear sister.”
I just groan as Joseph says, ““That would explain why his eyes weren’t green before.”
I remember back to that day and I go to the moment when I was looking into his eyes before I stabbed him. I concentrate on the eyes and when I find it, I see that his eyes were gold but slight traces of green specs were lightly scattered. I sigh as I say, “His was the same as Sam’s. We wouldn’t have seen the green unless his emotions had gotten the best of him. He was just in more control than Sam was.”
“Exactly but now with Ursela up and about, all the ones she’s bitten have their eyes fully green.”
“And any that were destroyed by a regular vampire was simply brought back by her powers,” Harry says grimly. “We have no idea how many Carla brought to Ursela. Plus is Ursela bringing all the ones killed back to life or is she only picking a few? The situation just got a bit more complicated.”
Rob appears to comprehend everything that happened and he asks, “But why are my eyes no longer green? They turned back to normal after she bit me.”
Charlie shakes his head as he says, “That I’m not sure. We might have to pay another visit to Vincent to get the complete story. There is still a lot we don’t know about Ursela and we’ll need him to fill in the blanks.”
I nod then turn to face Rob and say, “Well you can go. Just stay away from Carla and Ursela but we will not harm you.”
He nods and says, “If it was a choice between you two, I rather have you as my queen. Thank you and I’m sorry for any harm I’ve done to you.”
His apology throws me a bit but I just smile, as I respond, “No need to apologize. You didn’t know what you were doing.”
He smiles as he says, “Until we meet again. And if you ever need a favor or assistance for anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
He turns and disappears leaving us standing there in our thoughts. Charlie looks around and after letting out a sigh he asks, “So, where is my baby brother?”
I Hate Her, I Hate Her Not
(Sam)
Take care of my heart baby. I love you.
Her voice continues to haunt me as I struggle to wonder why I have the image of this woman in my head. Her beautiful almond shaped eyes are the color of emerald green. Her long brown flowing hair seems to surround her face as a breeze gently blows through it. Her lovely mouth so perfect as it curls into a warm smile. I can almost hear the sound of her voice as she lovingly says my name. I stare down at this band on my left ring finger as I try to recall who she is and how I know her but any memories prior to being with Ursela are fading…
I snap back to reality and her image disappears. It’s becoming more and more difficult to remember what my life was like before I joined our queen’s group. It’s been only a week since I’ve returned to Ursela but to me it feels like a century. Staring at the wedding band, I assume I’m married so I try really hard to remember my wife but the only thing that seems to consume my thoughts is my thirst. Ursela makes sure that we are constantly hunting and no matter how much blood I take in, it’s never enough. Part of me thinks she’s using her magic to make me constantly feed so I don’t try to recall my life before she woke up. It also makes me wonder what she is so afraid of me remembering.
I’m sitting staring at nothing while trying to enjoy being alone with my thoughts but I feel another vampire join me in the park across from the house we’re crashing in. Well I guess the better way to describe it is the house we’ve taken over since we killed the family that used to occupy it. Ursela believes the whole world is ours for the taking so naturally everything belongs to us. If you ask me that’s pretty fucked up.
