I nod, unable to find words. My brother has always had a sixth sense about me, and this time is no different. He knew I was about to freak out.

We stroll down the sidewalk that leads around our neighborhood and saunter for a while in silence. Carter and I have taken this walk many times in our lives. It’s where he told me he was going to propose to Izzy and where I told him about the assignment of a lifetime in Boston.

I wish I could tell him what’s bothering me now, but that’s a line I can’t cross with my brother. It’s too weird. I’ll tell Carter pretty much everything, but I can’t admit that I’ve never experienced an O before. Not to him. It’s way too embarrassing and TMI considering he’s my brother.

  Unfortunately, Carter has other ideas.

“So, are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”

  I hedge.

“It’s nothing, really. I’m just admiring Catrina’s family. Sometimes it makes me jealous to see how perfect they all are.”

Carter throws an arm around my shoulder.

“Chloe, I know you want a family too, but you’re practically a baby. You’ve still got plenty of time for kids and a husband.”

  I snort.

“Catrina already had Kevin when she was my age.”

  Carter rolls his eyes.

“Yeah, but that’s her. Catrina’s been ready to have a baby since she was ten. Besides, I’m three years older than you, and I just got engaged.”

Carter does have a point. This is why I need him around because he talks sense into me.

“Hey, how was that thing in Boston?” he asks, interrupting my train of thought. “I know you were excited about it.”

My face lights up. Only Carter really gets my journalism job. My parents are dentists, Catrina is a doctor, and Carter is a lawyer, so my family has never understood why I chose to do something creative with my life. The science gene must have missed me.

  I smile.

“It was amazing, honestly, and I think my boss is going to let me do more big assignments because she was so impressed with my work.”

Carter pulls me in for a hug.

“That’s great, Chloe. Izzy really enjoyed reading about the summit. Did I tell you that she reads all of your articles? I try to read them, but I don’t think I’m your target audience,” he adds drolly.

“Oh my god, I didn’t know Izzy read my stuff! That’s so sweet of her.”

My brother nods, his hair a little shaggy.

“Yeah, she’s been reading the magazine since long before I met her. She was really excited when I told her you write for Women Weekly. You’re like a celebrity to her, you know,” he says with a wink.

My heart is nearly bursting. I’ve always liked Carter’s fiancée, but now I love her even more. I’ll have to see if I can get her some swag from the magazine or something.

We saunter some more in comfortable silence, enjoying the cool breeze. Finally, the walk ends and we stroll back up to the front door.

“Thanks for the walk,” I tell my brother while stopping right by the hedge. “I needed that.”

  He grins.

“I could tell, kiddo. You know I’ll always get you out of sticky situations.”

My brother winks at me and I feel a rush of love. I’m so lucky to have my family, but it just goes to ask: when will I have a family of my own? Mom and Dad have each other; Catrina has her husband; and Carter has Izzy. When will I get my turn?

But I force myself to stay in the present. Back inside, our family is already seated at the dinner table. Carter takes his spot beside Izzy and I settle in next to Mom. After we say grace, we dig into the delicious food, including perfectly-seared steaks, creamed spinach and grilled corn on the cob. I may get annoyed with family dinners sometimes, but I will say this: my parents are incredible cooks. Thankfully, they always make way too much and give us leftovers to take home. Yum. I’ll be having steak for lunch tomorrow and Tuesday.

After we finish eating, we settle into the living room to play a board game, which is also a family tradition. But as people grab drinks and sit down, I look over my family and feel another pang of loneliness. I wish I had someone special to share this moment with, and honestly, Brett Northing would be right at home playing Monopoly with my siblings. His low laugh would ring out, and his eyes would meet mine while we competed to buy Park Place. Could it ever happen?

I don’t know, but I’m determined to see him again and now, my next appointment can’t come soon enough.

  7

  Brett

Damn, I need to get my act together. The session with Chloe was amazing, but that’s the problem. It was too amazing. After she left, I looked down and saw that my determination not to spurt was futile. There was semen coating my boxers and streaming down one leg because she was just too sassy and gorgeous. The girl didn’t even touch me, and yet I released just from caressing her.

Oh shit. I’m in a bad position, and I know it. I need to talk to someone, and as a result, I call my buddy Karl to meet at a bar.

There are only two vibrational healing practices in New York City. I run one of them, and Karl’s got the other. We weren’t friends at first. In school, we were instantly competitive and always trying to top one another. That’s just how alpha males roll, but after a while, we settled into a friendly competitiveness. After all, our industry is small, and you need all the pals you can get. Who else is going to listen to you bitch about patients, or talk about successes?

I open the heavy wood door to our favorite downtown bar. The place is packed, as usual, but they brew their own beer so it’s worth the noise. Karl isn’t here yet, so I find a couple seats at the bar and order our first round.

Suddenly, a heavy hand claps my back.

“Hey, man. Long time no see. How was the conference last weekend?”

I turn and see my buddy. The dude looks like a Viking, being about six five with the build of a football player. He’s got bright blonde hair that contrasts with his deeply tanned skin, and intense blue eyes that can be intimidating. But right now, they’re real friendly.

“It was great,” I grunt. “You should’ve come.”

“Maybe next year,” he says, taking a seat. “It’s hard to close the practice that long.”

I nod. Every year, I weigh the pros and cons of taking time off to attend the conference because hell, I hate missing my patients. But the new techniques and networking are worth it. As a result, I keep going despite having to close my doors.

The bartender brings us our beers, the amber ale pale golden with a layer of foam at the top. It’s got hints of orange and coconut, which might seem strange, but it somehow works.

“How are things over at Good Vibrations?” I ask Karl, cringing at the name of his practice. I tried to get him to name it something less hokey but he went for it anyway. You can only do so much.

The server brings over our nachos and I grab a few chips, shoving them into my mouth. Karl laughs.

“Dude, did I tell you about the kooky old woman I had last week?”

I shake my head and eat another nacho. “No.”

  He chuckles again.

“Seriously, you should’ve seen her. Woman shows up in draped scarves and nothing else. One wrong move and I would’ve seen all of her, and I mean all. I’m not a prude or anything and I know we sometimes have to see our patients naked, but I don’t think the folks in the waiting room need to be subjected to that.”

  I grunt.

“It takes a certain type of person to show up ready to bare it all.”

  He rolls his eyes.

“No dude, it gets worse. I lead her back into the exam room and she immediately starts telling me how to do my job. Can you believe that? Starts telling me about crystals and homeopathy, and I wanted to punch her in the gut. Who’s the doctor here?”

  I shrug.

“Sorry dude,” I say. “You know it happens.”

After all, there are always patients who think they have MDs. They think they’re experts, but really, all they’ve done is spent twenty minutes on Google reading about holistic medicine. Once, I had a guy come in and tell me to hook him up to the electroshock machine to fix his headaches. I don’t even do electroshock, nor would that be my choice of therapy for his particular ailment. But the guy was stubborn. He wanted electroshock, and he was going to get it some way or another. Clearly, he left my office unsatisfied.

“It gets worse,” Karl continues, shaking his head. “She lays down on the exam bed, tells me her feet hurt, and then pulls out a bag of crystals from who knows where. I don’t even want to know where she was hiding them.”

“Oh, shit,” I repeat, crunching on a nacho.

“Yeah. Then she goes, ‘I need you to pipe in some Enya themes,’ and hands me the crystals. I must have sat there staring at her for a good five minutes before she sat up and waved her hand like ‘Get on it, boy.’ I tried to tell her that this is my practice, and that I was calling the shots, but she just wouldn’t listen.”

I shake my head, popping another nacho.

  “They always think they know.”

  Karl nods.

“Yeah. The last straw was when I told her I’d only use my own crystals for vibrational therapy. She got up and stormed out in a huff but left half her scarves behind! I swear, this woman must have mooned everyone on First Avenue because she was covering herself with all of two scarves. And trust me, she was saggy and baggy and at least seventy years old.”

  I laugh.

“Holy shit. Damn, man. I haven’t had anyone that bad in a long time.”

“Lucky you,” he says. “I swear, I can still see her saggy boddy scampering out with scarves flying behind. Craziness comes with the territory.”

We laugh, and Karl quaffs his beer. Then he turns to me.

“So what about you, my friend? You get any kooks recently?”

I hesitate for a moment. Should I tell him about Chloe? On the one hand, I don’t want to share information about my gorgeous new patient. On the other, I’m also going crazy because she’s taking up every bit of my mental energy.

“I do have a new patient who was … interesting,” I say. “She asked a lot of questions and we had a good time, and then she called and made another appointment.”

Karl offers me a high five.

“Congrats, my man. It’s the best when the hesitant ones come back. That’s how you know we’re changing lives.”

He does have a point. I nod, but Karl knows there’s more to it than that.

“So what’s her issue? Is it an easy fix?”

I hesitate, but then go for it.

“She’s never had an orgasm. Well, not before our first appointment at least.”

  Karl whistles again.

“Good job, my man. So you fixed that up quick for her, right?”

  I think back.

  “Yeah, I definitely did.”

Karl gets a devilish gleam in his eye.

  “So what’s the problem?”

I let out a breath and roll my eyes.

“Well, I’m thinking about doing Face Time with her.”

Karl whistles. Face Time is a special treatment that we offer only our most curvy, luscious patients. It involves tasting women in their secret spots to provide intimate, mind-blowing vibrational healing. It’s naughty and wrong, but it delivers results one hundred percent of the time. Once you get Face Time, you never go back.

  Karl shakes his head.

“You serious about this treatment? She must be cute then.”

  I nod.

“Yeah, she’s really cute. Actually, she’s downright gorgeous, which is why I’m thinking about doing it.”

Karl whistles, looking at me with admiration.

“I don’t know, my man. I mean, I can’t make this decision for you because Face Time is very personal. But I will say that the ladies who get Face Time are forever changed. The ones I’ve given it to won’t stop calling and keep coming back, and that’s where the problem lies.”

I nod because Karl’s right. Face Time binds a woman to you sometimes, and on occasion, she won’t back off even though the treatment is well and done. Am I ready to risk that with Chloe?

“Yeah, you’re right,” I say slowly. “I don’t know her well and Face Time is … ah, well, a very personal treatment, shall we say? But I think it could be worth it with this girl. She’s just so innocent and beautiful, and she says she’s never had the Big O before. Is it worth the risk?”

Karl grins and shakes his head.

“Only you can make that decision, my friend. But you know me. I always err on the side of being generous. Give her the treatment once, and see how it goes. If she doesn’t freak out and become clingy and possessive, then keep going. You’ll be fine. I know you can handle yourself.”

  I nod, still thinking.

“Yeah, thanks my man. We’ll see.”

Karl chuckles. “If she’s cute then send her over to me and I’ll do it.”

I snort and take a long swig of my beer. The last thing I want is for him to touch Chloe.

  “Please motherfucker. Back off.”

“So she is cute,” Karl concludes. “Why do I get the crazy old women and you get the cute young ones? What the fuck? I need to steal your marketing strategy.”

“Screw you,” I say, but we’re both snorting with humor. Karl has had some bad luck in terms of kooky patients, and the old woman he told me about earlier was probably one of the tamer ones, to be honest. He once had a woman show up and demand that he fix her aura and that of her dead husband, who allegedly joined her at the appointment. I’m not sure what these patients think it is we do, but we definitely don’t talk to dead husbands.

The bartender comes by and asks if we want another round. It’s still pretty early, so we drink the rest of our current glasses and ask her to bring us a couple more.

“I did have a better case today, actually,” Karl says after our drinks arrive. “This teen girl who plays for some elite young tennis club and wants to go pro someday came in about a month ago. She was terrified. She broke her wrist last year fooling around with some friends. Regular doctors told her she’d never play tennis professionally. I was her last-ditch effort to prove everyone wrong. A few sessions and some well-placed crystals later, and she was fully mobile once more. This morning, she came in to tell me she made it into this major tournament which is apparently a big deal in the tennis world.”

“Great work,” I remark, as he continues going on about a couple of his patients. But it all fades to black because I’m thinking of Chloe again.

After all, Face Time is an incredibly intimate, but legitimate, procedure. A female patient sits on the doctor’s face and he vibrates into her sweet spot, giving her a Big O that way. It’s about frequencies, and achieving the perfect pitch in order to realign a patient’s chi. A crystal is sometimes inserted as well, in order to better channel her internal energies, but that’s not always necessary.

Again, it’s an incredibly intimate procedure, and not something we offer very often. In fact, I’ve only performed Face Time a few times with a few select, beautiful women. Am I ready to take the plunge with Chloe?

I don’t know. My body says yes because she’s so ripe and gorgeous, but with my previous patients, I never wanted the woman. I enjoyed my job and bringing them to ecstasy, but I never desired them, and certainly never spurted like a fourteen year old adolescent.

I need to get a hold of myself. Sure, Chloe is beautiful, but first things first. Maybe she’ll be turned off by the idea of Face Time. Maybe she’ll think I’m some kind of predator, out to take advantage of her vulnerable position. Or maybe, she just wants some crystal healing. That could make sense too.

I look up from my beer and see Karl squinting at me.

  “Were you even listening?”

The lie is on my lips, but I opt for the truth instead.

“Sorry my man, I’m a bit distracted.”

“You were thinking about Face Time with the cute patient, weren’t you?”

  I nod.

  “Yeah.”

He grins while clapping me on the back.

“Have fun with it,” he urges. “Stay professional, but enjoy yourself too. Why not? The opportunity to do Face Time doesn’t come around that often, and you know what I always say: you only live once.”

We both let out snorts of laughter, and motion for the check. Once we’re outside, I turn to my Viking friend.

“Thanks man,” I say. “I’ll let you know how it goes.”

  He grins.

  “You better.”

And with that, we part, walking in opposite directions. I head back to my apartment, still thinking about Chloe and Face Time. Am I ready? Is she ready? If I’m this obsessive now, I can’t imagine what it’ll be like the next time I see Chloe. After all, it could be a huge success or an even bigger disaster. Only time will tell, and I can’t wait to see the curvy brunette again.

  8

  Chloe

It’s late afternoon and there are a lot of people milling around on the sidewalk. I’ve already gotten a bunch of funny looks as I pace back and forth, trying to convince myself that this appointment is a good idea.

My fingers hover over Maggie’s number, but I don’t hit the call button because she’s busy today. Maggie swore she’d make herself available in case I needed her, but I don’t want to need her. This appointment is something I need to do for myself, no matter how conflicted I am.

After all, I went back and forth all week, trying to decide if I should cancel or not. I really want to take things to the next level with Brett, but what if he doesn’t want that? What if I’ve misread the entire situation, and he sees this as a coldly clinical medical appointment, and nothing more?

After all, the receptionist mentioned that this was an “intake” appointment, but I don’t know what that means. Will we just be doing paperwork? I’m so confused.

Taking a deep breath, I push open the door to Sensation Healing. My heart races, and my entire body trembles, but it’s time. Fortunately, the bitchy receptionist from my last visit has been replaced with a kind-looking older woman.
