“He lets things happen, Letty,” he said, “and we have to go on living.” He released her, and let his arms fall.

“Robert,” Leticia said, “look at me. The future will be whatever the future is. But right now is right now, and that’s all we ever really have. There are billions of people in this world, and for many of them life just sucks. You and I, we are very fortunate. But sometimes things are hard. All I know for certain is that this moment, right now, was ordained before time began. And inside my body, there are two little baby nuggets, and they are going to love their dad, and you will be a great dad.”

“You don’t know that,” Robert said.

  “Yes, I do.”

“How?” Leticia reached down and pinched Robert’s arm. “Ow!” he exclaimed, and flinched.

“Because I know you,” she said. “Do you think I’ll be a good mom?” Robert raised his head.

  “Oh, absolutely,” he said.

“Well, it’s the same for me.”

“But what if something happens, Letty? To us.”

Letty searched her husband’s face and saw that he was trapped in one of his loops. Without some kind of intervention, she knew, he would remain this way for a long time, longer than they had to spare. She had a well-developed set of tools for “bringing him out” as she called it, and some worked better than others. Given the present circumstance, she went straight for the big guns.

“Come with me,” she said, standing up.

  “Where?”

  “Our room.”

  “Why?”

“Because,” she said. She thought of the silver gift bag hidden in the closet. “Remember I said I was planning something for tonight?”

“Yes,” he said, and she could see his eyes changing.

“There’s something I want to show you,” she said, walking away down the hallway, leaving a desaturated puce trail of assorted fabrics for Robert to follow.
